Long Island Edges Women's Basketball, 47-46

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Long Island nailed a 3-pointer with 2:07 left to take the advantage and held on to down Mount St. Mary's 47-46 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) paced the Mount (7-9, 2-5 NEC) with 10 points while Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) and Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) each chipped in eight points in the loss.

Andresson gave the Mountaineers a 44-42 edge on a jumper with 3:56 remaining before Ashley Palmer tied the game at 44 with 3:40 on the clock. Mount St. Mary's then missed two chances to take the advantage and the Blackbirds (6-11, 1-5 NEC) also missed a chance. Marika Sprow gave Long Island the lead it would not relinquish on a 3-pointer off a Jade Brown assist with 2:07 remaining.

Oliver then cut the deficit to one point after the junior rebounded her own miss and scored with 50 seconds left. After a Blackbirds turnover, Oliver missed a jumper with six seconds remaining and the rebound was corralled by Johnson. The freshman then missed her free throw and Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) grabbed the rebound with 4.5 seconds remaining, but the Mount could not record a great offensive shot in the time remaining.

Johnson fueled Long Island with 15 points and nine rebounds while Connie James added 10 points and seven rebounds. Brown finished the game with six points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals and Sprow chipped in six points in the winning effort.

In a defensive struggle between the two programs where neither team could take more than a six-point lead, the Blackbirds came through down the stretch to earn its first conference win of the year and its fifth-straight against the Mountaineers.

In the first half, Long Island jumped out to a 12-7 advantage midway through the first half and a 19-13 margin with 3:46 left in the stanza thanks to six points from Palmer and five points from Chelsi Johnson. Mount St. Mary's ended the half on a 7-0 run to go into the locker room with a 20-19 edge. Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) started the surge with a layup at 1:42 before Oliver drilled a jumper with 55 ticks on the clock. Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) then put the Mount up for the first time since three minutes into the contest with a 3-pointer with 16 second left for a 20-19 advantage.

The Blackbirds fought back to grab a 32-27 advantage with 14:12 remaining sparked by seven points by Johnson. The Mount answered with a 9-0 run to grab it largest lead at 36-32 with 9:28 left. Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md.,/St. Mary's) opened the spurt with two free throws at 13:52 before Dunn scored in the paint at 13:13. Dunn then handed the Mount the lead on a traditional 3-point play at 10:19 before Oliver converted two charity tosses at 9:28 for a 36-32 margin. James scored four unanswered points to knot the game at 36 with 7:39 left and the two teams traded the advantage for the next five minutes before Sprow drained the decisive basket at the 2:07 mark.

Gauthier finished with four points to move into 25th place on the program's all-time list with 926 career points. The senior also dished out two assists and now needs eight helpers to crack the program's Top-10 in that category. Nyce finished the game with a career-high four points along with four rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Monmouth. Game time is 3 p.m.
