EMMITSBURG,
Md. Long Island nailed a 3-pointer with 2:07 left to take
the advantage and held on to down Mount St. Mary's 47-46 in
Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.
Hassanah
Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) paced the Mount (7-9, 2-5 NEC)
with 10 points while Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes
School) and Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) each chipped
in eight points in the loss.
Andresson
gave the Mountaineers a 44-42 edge on a jumper with 3:56 remaining
before Ashley Palmer tied the game at 44 with 3:40 on the clock.
Mount St. Mary's then missed two chances to take the advantage and
the Blackbirds (6-11, 1-5 NEC) also missed a chance. Marika Sprow
gave Long Island the lead it would not relinquish on a 3-pointer
off a Jade Brown assist with 2:07 remaining.
Oliver
then cut the deficit to one point after the junior rebounded her
own miss and scored with 50 seconds left. After a Blackbirds
turnover, Oliver missed a jumper with six seconds remaining and the
rebound was corralled by Johnson. The freshman then missed her free
throw and Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary
School) grabbed the rebound with 4.5 seconds remaining, but the
Mount could not record a great offensive shot in the time
remaining.
Johnson
fueled Long Island with 15 points and nine rebounds while Connie
James added 10 points and seven rebounds. Brown finished the game
with six points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals and
Sprow chipped in six points in the winning effort.
In a
defensive struggle between the two programs where neither team
could take more than a six-point lead, the Blackbirds came through
down the stretch to earn its first conference win of the year and
its fifth-straight against the Mountaineers.
In the
first half, Long Island jumped out to a 12-7 advantage midway
through the first half and a 19-13 margin with 3:46 left in the
stanza thanks to six points from Palmer and five points from Chelsi
Johnson. Mount St. Mary's ended the half on a 7-0 run to go into
the locker room with a 20-19 edge. Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville,
Pa./Perkiomen Valley) started the surge with a layup at 1:42 before
Oliver drilled a jumper with 55 ticks on the clock. Lauren Howell
(Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) then put the Mount up for the first
time since three minutes into the contest with a 3-pointer with 16
second left for a 20-19 advantage.
The
Blackbirds fought back to grab a 32-27 advantage with 14:12
remaining sparked by seven points by Johnson. The Mount answered
with a 9-0 run to grab it largest lead at 36-32 with 9:28 left.
Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md.,/St. Mary's) opened the spurt
with two free throws at 13:52 before Dunn scored in the paint at
13:13. Dunn then handed the Mount the lead on a traditional 3-point
play at 10:19 before Oliver converted two charity tosses at 9:28
for a 36-32 margin. James scored four unanswered points to knot the
game at 36 with 7:39 left and the two teams traded the advantage
for the next five minutes before Sprow drained the decisive basket
at the 2:07 mark.
Gauthier
finished with four points to move into 25th place on the program's
all-time list with 926 career points. The senior also dished out
two assists and now needs eight helpers to crack the program's
Top-10 in that category. Nyce finished the game with a career-high
four points along with four rebounds in 21 minutes of
action.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Monmouth. Game
time is 3 p.m.
