Stingy Defense Powers Women's Basketball Past Fairleigh Dickinson, 62-34

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary) scored 14 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Fairleigh Dickinson 62-34 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.

The Mount (7-7, 2-3 NEC) held the Knights (4-10, 3-3 NEC) to nine points in the first half. The Mountaineers' stingy defense shutdown the Fairleigh Dickinson offense after the Knights connected on just 3 of 19 shots (15.8 percent) in the first stanza. It marked the first time Mount St. Mary's held an opponent to single digits in a half since keeping Robert Morris to eight points in the first period on Jan. 8, 1994. Fairleigh Dickinson finished the game with 34 points, the fourth fewest in program history and a Mount Division I record.

Westbrooks posted eight points in the first half and finished the contest with 14 points and eight rebounds. Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) added 12 points and Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) recorded her third double-figure performance of the year with 10 points in the winning effort.

Alyssa Mayrose paced the Knights with six points and 14 rebounds while Mariyah Laury and Jordan Sykes each had a team-high seven points in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's took control from the outset, scoring the first nine points and 15 of the first 17 in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back to earn its second-straight victory.

Oliver and Andresson combined to score the first nine points of the night. Oliver got the scoring started with two free throws at 19:06 before Andresson nailed a jumper at 18:33. Oliver converted a traditional 3-point play at 17:37 and Andresson capped the duo's run with her second jumper at 17:11 for a 9-0 advantage.

After Shenika Chang put Fairleigh Dickinson on the scoreboard with a jumper at 16:47, Andresson hit a jumper before Westbrooks scored the next four points for a 15-2 margin with 15:04 left in the first half.

The Mount continued to pour onto the lead by scoring 22 of the final 29 points to take a 37-9 lead going into the locker room. Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) and Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) each had six points during the final 15 minutes to help the Mountaineers take a 28-point lead at the break.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored six of the first eight points in the final stanza thanks to baskets by Laury, Sykes and Mayrose to cut the margin to 39-15, but could get no closer the rest of the way. Both teams finished the stanza with 25 points.

The Mount has held an opponent under 40 points for the second time this season after holding Colgate to 39 in the season opener on Nov. 14.

The program record for fewest points allowed is 22 against Hood and Frederick Community College in the 1975-76 season. The 34 points against the Knights also ranks behind 31 points against UMBC on Feb. 1, 1978.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Knott Arena against Sacred Heart. Game time is 7 p.m.
