Men's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short in 6-5 Double-Overtime Loss to Marist

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the final 41 seconds to force overtime, but it was not enough as Marist pulled out a 6-5 victory in double overtime. Freshman Dan Mohr scored three times in the loss for the Mount (1-10, 1-5 MAAC).

Mohr put the Mount on the scoreboard first, scoring an extra-man goal on a feed from Joe Derwent 4:49 into the game. Marist (2-12, 2-3 MAAC) responded with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead after one quarter. Corey Zindel evened the score and Matt Teichmann's tally with 1:12 left in the quarter gave Marist the lead.

Mohr converted a Jon Rodrick pass early in the second quarter to even the score at 2-2, but Corey Zindel's score with 4:36 left in the half restored the Marist lead. Mohr, however, answered with an unassisted goal with 2:05 left in the half to knot the game at 3-3. Marist held a 20-17 shot advantage in the half and a 16-8 edge in ground balls.

Zindel scored the only goal of the third quarter and Ryan McNierney's tally with 9:19 left in the game gave the Red Foxes a 5-3 advantage. That lead held until the Mount posted a furious rally to even the score. Geery Grant scored on a pass from Joe Derwent with 41 seconds left to cut the Marist lead to 5-4. Derwent then scored an unassisted goal with six second left to force the extra periods.

The Mount did not have a shot on goal in either overtime period as Marist was able to earn the victory on Paul Santavicca's extra-man goal just 14 seconds into the second overtime.

Mohr led the Mount with three goals, giving him a team-high 19 on the year. Derwent added a goal and two assists for the Mount in the loss. Freshman T.C. DiBartolo made a season-high 19 saves in the loss for the Mount.

Zindel paced Marist with three goals while Teichmann added a goal and an assist in the victory. Ryan Penner made 15 saves to earn the win in the cage.

Marist outshot the Mount 41-33 in the game and held a 25-22 edge in ground balls.

The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, April 23rd, when VMI visits Waldron Family Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. game.
