Philadelphia, Pa. (April 16,
2008)--Saint Joseph's scored four times in the third
quarter to edge Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference men's lacrosse matchup on Wednesday night. Mount
freshman T.C. DiBartolo made 12 saves in the loss.
The Mount (1-9, 1-4 MAAC) scored twice in
the first quarter to take the early lead. Geery Grant scored 5:33
into the first quarter to give the Mount a 1-0 lead. Senior Joe
Derwent's goal with five seconds left in the quarter made it a 2-0
margin. The Mount was able to maintain that lead into the
half.
The Hawks (3-9, 3-3 MAAC), however, came
out flying in the third quarter to take control. Saint Joseph's
outshot the Mount, 14-0, in the decisive quarter, scoring four
times to grab a 4-2 lead. Andrew Mandela finally got Saint
Joseph's on the scoreboard with 9:18 left in the third quarter.
Scott Cullinan then scored on an Alex Lopes feed just 1:14 later to
knot the score at 2-2. Lopes found Mandela who beat DiBartolo with
a shot with 4:34 left in the quarter to give the Hawks their first
lead of the game. Sean Evans rounded out the scoring in the
quarter with a goal with 2:16 left.
The Mount's Dan Mohr connected for his
team-leading 16th goal with 8:56 left in the game to cut the
deficit to 4-3, but Saint Joseph's was able to hold off the Mount
the rest of the way to earn the one-goal victory.
Saint Joseph's outshot the Mount, 32-23,
in the game and held a slight 23-22 advantage in ground balls.
DiBartolo made 12 saves in the loss while Hotaling turned away 13
shots in the victory.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday
with a 1 pm game at Marist.
