EMMITSBURG, Md. Mary
Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic), a member of the Mount St.
Mary's women's basketball team, has been named the Northeast
Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week for the week of Feb. 18-Feb.
24. It marks the second time this season the freshman has earned
the award.
Dunn, a 5-11 freshman forward,
posted all of her career-high 17 points in the second half to help
the Mount come from behind to defeat Saint Francis (Pa.) 84-72 on
Saturday. The freshman stuff the stat sheet by also posting four
rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks against the Red
Flash while going 7 of 8 shooting from the field and 3 of 3 from
the free throw line.
For the year, Dunn is
averaging 8.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She has registered
double figures in 11 of her last 15 games, including six
double-doubles. Dunn has 219 points and 212 rebounds this season,
marking the first time a Mount freshman had 200 points and 200
rebounds in a campaign since Kia Williams posted 451 points and 205
boards in 1997-98.
Dunn becomes the first player
to earn multiple NEC Rookie of the Week honors since senior Tiffany
Green (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) earned the award three times
in 2004-05 on her way to being named the NEC Rookie of the Year.
Dunn also received the recognition for the first week of the
season. Fellow freshman Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart)
took home the NEC Rookie of the Week honor for the week of Jan.
27-Feb. 3.
Along with Dunn, Green and
Howell, senior Dominique Mazzuchi (Springfield, Va./The Patterson
School [N.C.]) and junior Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St.
Mary's) each nabbed the award once in their
first season.
The Mount (8-19, 6-10 NEC)
returns to action on Monday at Robert Morris. Game time is 7
p.m.
