Emmitsburg, Md. (February 2,
2008)--Robert Morris used a 23-to-3 run that spanned the
end of the first half and beginning of the second half to earn a
75-63 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday night at Knott Arena.
A.J. Jackson scored 20 points to pace Robert Morris (17-6, 8-2 NEC)
in the win. Chris Vann led the Mountaineers (10-12, 6-5 NEC) with
22 points while freshman Jean Cajou chipped in a career high 10
points off the bench.
Freshman Shawn Atupem scored in the paint
to give the Mount a 20-16 lead with 8:24 left in the half, but the
Colonials proceeded to go on a 16-to-2 run to close out the half
and a 7-1 run to open the second half to take a commanding 39-23
advantage. Robert Morris held the Mount without a field goal for
11:32 in that run.
Robert Morris held a 59-42 lead with 7:56
after a pair of Jeremy Chappell free throws before the Mount went
on a 15-7 run to cut the deficit to 66-57 on a Cajou three-pointer
with 2:27 left. The Mount forced a steal on the next possession,
but could not convert on the offensive end and the Colonials were
able to hold the Mount at bay the rest of the way.
Jackson led RMU with 20 points while
Chappell finished with 14 points and 11 boards for a
double-double. Tony Lee chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds for
the Colonials, who held a 42-to-24 advantage on the boards in the
game.
Vann led the Mount with a game-high 22
points, but he was just 6-of-18 from the field and 3-of-13 from
three-point range in the game. Kelly Beidler chipped in 11 points
off the bench, his second-straight game in double digits in scoring
while Cajou was 4-for-5 from the field for his career-best 10
points.
The Mount shot 38.2 percent from the
field in the game, including 5-of-23 (.217) from three-point
range.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on
Thursday, Feb. 7, when Wagner visits Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m.
game.
