Connecticut State edged Mount St. Mary's, 66-65, in overtime on a
late rebound basket with 3.4 seconds left in Northeast Conference
action on Saturday afternoon. It was the Mount's second-straight
loss, dropping the team's record to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the NEC.
Leading
65-64 with 26 seconds left in overtime, the Mount's Jean Cajou, who
had seven of the Mount's nine overtime points, headed to the foul
line with for a one-and-one opportunity. Cajou missed the free throw, and
teammate Markus Mitchell corralled the rebound, but was called for
traveling to give CCSU the ball.
On
Central Connecticut State's possession, Joe Seymore drove the lane,
but his floater was off the mark. Blue Devil forward Ken Horton grabbed
the rebound and missed from in the lane, but Seymore collected
Horton's miss and converted his putback with 3.4 seconds
left.
Jeremy
Goode got the inbounds pass, but his 35-footer at the buzzer was
off the mark, giving the Blue Devils (4-3, 1-0 NEC) the
victory.
The
Mount had a chance to win the game in regulation. Seymore hit a floater in the lane with
24 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 54-54. On the ensuing possession, the Mount
let the clock run down and Goode had a 12-foot fadeaway jumper fell
short, forcing the extra session.
Mount
St. Mary's rallied in the second half to grab the lead. Trailing 51-48 with 4:29 left in the
game, Kelly Beidler scored eight straight points, the last of which
came on a three-pointer with 3:05 left in the game that gave the
Mount a 56-53 advantage.
Horton
converted one free throw with 2:54 on the clock to cut the Mount
lead to 56-54. Neither team
scored over the next 2½ minutes. With just under a minute left and the
Mount leading by two, Will Holland was called for a charge, setting
up CCSU's Seymore with the chance to force overtime.
Goode
led the Mount with 19 points and three steals while Beidler tied
his career high with 17 points in the loss. Sam Atupem chipped in eight points and
nine boards in the loss.
Horton
finished with a game-high 22 points while David Simmons added 13
points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Shemik Thompson chipped in 10 points,
seven rebounds, seven assists and nine turnovers in the CCSU
victory.
The
Mount hit just 4-of-13 (.308) at the foul line in the contest,
compared to 12-of-16 (.750) from Central Connecticut State.
In
the first half, the Mount grabbed a 12-9 lead after a Goode
three-point basket with just under 13 minutes left in the first
half. Goode, however,
picked up his second foul and the Blue Devils responded with a 9-0
run, capped by five straight points from Horton, for an 18-12
advantage with 9:37 left in the half. CCSU was able to maintain the lead,
24-20, at the half.
Goode
paced the Mount with eight first half points while Horton led the
Blue Devils with nine. The
Mount shot 39.5 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes
with CCSU hitting 38.6 percent.
Mount
St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, December 9, when Navy
visits Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game.

Connecticut State now holds a 16-10 advantage in the all-time
series with the Mount and has won seven of the past eight
meetings. The Mount was
7-of-14 (.500) from three-point range.
