Canisius Downs Women's Basketball, 77-62

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius used the outside shot to take the advantage and then the inside game in the second half to maintain the lead and defeat Mount St. Mary's 77-62 in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Sandra Andresson (Tallin, Estonia/Audentes School) notched a career-high 13 points. Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) also registered 13 points for the Mount (5-6) while Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) recorded her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) chipped in 11 points in the loss.

Marie Warner posted 21 of her 23 points in the second half along with nine rebounds for the Golden Griffins (9-4) and Ellie Radke added 19 points and eight rebounds. Amanda Cavo nailed four 3-pointers in the first half and finished the contest with 12 points.

Cavo helped get Canisius the lead in the first half and then Warner and Radke took over in the second stanza to help the Griffs even the series against the Mountaineers in the first matchup between the two programs since 2002.

Cavo nailed four 3-pointers in the first half, including the first two of the contest for the Golden Griffins to hand Canisius the lead it would not relinquish at 6-3 with three minutes and 13 seconds into the game.

The Golden Griffins extended the margin to 14-7 before Andresson sparked a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 11:42 on the clock. Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) started the surge with a basket in the paint before Andresson hit a jumper and converted her own steal into a fastbreak layup at 11:42.

Canisius answered with a 15-3 run to grab a 29-16 advantage with 6:03 remaining until halftime. Radke started the run with a jumper at 11:23 before Cavo drained her third trey of the afternoon at 10:47 and then Radke scored in the paint at 9:30 for a 21-13 margin.

Howell momentarily halted the spurt with a 3-ball at 9:12 only to see the Golden Griffins run off the next eight points thanks to 3-pointers by Micayla Drysdale and Brianna Lucas and a layup by Brtittane Russell.

Mount St. Mary's then scored eight of the next 10 points fueled by an Andresson layup and a pair of Gauthier 3-pointers to trim the margin to 31-24. The Golden Griffins then ended the half on a 9-2 run to go into the locker room with a 40-26 lead. Canisius was aided by seven made baskets from behind the arc in the first half.

In the second half with the Golden Griffins holding a 52-38 lead, the Mount went on a 9-2 run to cut the margin to 54-47 with 10:41 left. Andresson started the run with a layup at 13:20 before Radke answered with a bucket in the paint at 13:08. Gauthier then scored the next five points on a 3-pointer and a layup before Westbrooks capped the run with layup at 10:41. The Mountaineers had several offensive chances over the next two minutes but could not cut into the lead. Warner then took over by scoring the next six points and Mount St. Mary's could get no closer the rest of the way.

The Mountaineers return home against the defending Northeast Conference Tournament champion Robert Morris on Monday. Game time is 3 p.m.
