Emmitsburg, Md. (December 29, 2008)--Jean Cajou (Fairfax,
Va./Paul VI) scored a game-high 16 points to lead Mount
St. Mary's to a 68-44 victory over Bryant on Monday night at Knott
Arena on campus. The Mount held Bryant to 24.5 percent shooting in
the game to snap a six-game losing streak.
The Mount scored the first four points of
the game and never trailed in the contest. Leading 12-5 after a
Markus Mitchell (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) layup,
Bryant scored the next six points to cut the margin to 12-11, but
the Mount rattled off the next 12 points to take control of the
game.
Cajou kick-started the run with a
traditional three-point play and finished the stretch with a
three-pointer. The Mount ended the half on a 9-2 run for a 35-17
halftime lead. The Bulldogs
(1-11) missed a jumper with five seconds left in the half and the
Mount's Pierre Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Fairfax)
collected the rebound, fed Cajou for a fast-break lay-up for a
35-17 lead at the break.
The Mount extended its lead to as much as
27 points before earning the 24-point victory. The Mount shot 49.0
percent in the game while holding Bryant to 24.5 percent from the
field.
Cajou had 16 points, three rebounds,
three assists and three steals to pace the Mount while
Kelly Beidler (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) added
10 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the
season in the victory. Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside)
added 12 rebounds and six boards off the bench for the Mountaineers
(4-8). Brown
finished with a career-high six points off the bench for the Mount
while Lamar Trice (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep
Charter) tallied his first career points with a basket
late in the contest.
Nick Pontes was the only Bryant player in
double figures, scoring a team-high 12 points off the bench.
The Mount returns to action on Friday,
January 2, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Lafayette.
