Goode (Charlotte,
N.C./Providence Day) scored 23 points to lead Mount St. Mary's to a
78-69 win over Boston University on Saturday night at Knott Arena
on campus. Senior Markus
Mitchell (Virginia
Beach, Va./Salem) added 10 points and 12 rebounds for his second
career double-double in the victory.
With the
score tied at 62-62 with 5:44 left in the game, the Mount (2-2)
scored six straight points and was able to hold off the Terriers
(3-2) for the victory. Kelly
Beidler (Virginia
Beach, Va./Tallwood) broke the tie with a three-pointer from the
right corner. Goode followed with a steal and a lay-up and
Mitchell added a free throw to give the Mount a 68-62 advantage
with 3:56 left in the game.
Sophomore
Shawn
Atupem (Newport
News, Va./Woodside) added a key rebound basket in the final minute
to seal the win. Goode missed a three-pointer to start that
possession and Beidler grabbed the rebound. His follow shot was
block, but the ball caromed into the rim and Atupem grabbed the
board and converted the putback to give the Mount a 74-67 advantage
with 43 seconds remaining.
Goode
finished with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and three
steals in a sensational all-around effort. After going 4-for-10 at
the foul line in the Mount's loss at George Mason on Tuesday, Goode
was 8-for-8 at the charity stripe tonight. Jean
Cajou (Fairfax,
Va./Paul VI) added 16 points and five boards while Shawn
Atupem chipped
in 11 points off the bench in the win.
Boston University kept in the game by hitting 10 three-point
baskets. The Terriers finished 10-for-27 (.370) from three-point
range in the game. Carlos Strong paced Boston University with 18
points and six boards off the bench while John Holland (17), Corey
Lowe (16) and Jake O'Brien (11) also reached double figures.
The Mount held the Terriers to 38.6 percent shooting in the game
and held a commanding 46-to-29 advantage on the boards.
In the first half, the Mount jumped to a 13-5 lead five minutes
into the contest with Goode scoring eight of those points. The
Terriers fought back to take a 24-21 advantage with 8:37 left in
the half, but a late 12-to-2 run lifted the Mount to a 40-33
advantage at the half. It is the fourth straight game the Mount
has led at the break.
The Mount heads to American on Monday night for a 9:00 p.m. game.
The game will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports
Network.
Game Notes...Prior to the game, the Mount unveiled
the 2008 Northeast Conference Championship banner...The game was
the first-ever meeting between the teams...It was the Mount's first
home game of the season...Goode has scored 20 or more points in
three of the Mount's four games this season.
