EMMITSBURG,
Md. Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary
School) notched her first collegiate double-double to power Mount
St. Mary's past Lafayette 58-54 in non-conference women's
basketball action on Tuesday.
Westbrooks,
who was averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.0
rebounds per game coming into the contest, recorded 14 points and
10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double after narrowly
missing the feat in her first two games this season. The sophomore
shot 4-for-6 from the field and 6 of 11 from the free throw line
while adding two assists and four steals in 40 minutes of
action.
Brianna
Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) led all-scorers with 15
points while Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) registered
12 points off the bench to help the Mount (2-1) win two of its
first three contests for the first time since the 1996-97
season.
LaKeisha
Wright and Emily Garner each posted 13 points and seven rebounds
for the Leopards (0-4) in the loss.
Mount St.
Mary's held the lead for the majority of the game, but had to come
from behind in the waning minutes to become to the first home team
to win on its home floor in the series.
After
Elizabeth Virgin handed Lafayette a 52-51 edge with 3:49 left, the
Mountaineers scored seven of the final nine points to come away
with a 58-54 victory.
Hassanah
Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) reclaimed the lead for the final
time for Mount St. Mary's on a layup at the two minute mark for a
53-52 margin. Westbrooks then converted her steal into two made
free throws at 1:15 before Oliver nailed two from the line with 20
ticks on the clock.
Wright
answered with a pair from the charity stripe to trim the margin to
57-54 with seven seconds remaining, but Gauthier sealed the win by
hitting 1 of 2 free throws a second later.
Lafayette
started the game scoring the first five points thanks to three
points from Wright and a layup by Garner. The Mount then tied the
game at 5 after a Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) jumper
and a Howell 3-pointer. Mount St. Mary's then opened up a five and
six-point lead only to see the Leopards come back to cut the
deficit to a one possession game.
After
Wright cut the score to 20-19 with 2:55 left until halftime, the
Mount scored 10 of the final 12 points to go into the locker room
with a 30-21 edge. Gauthier started the run with a 3-pointer at
2:32 before Wright scored in the paint cut the margin to 23-21 with
2:09 on the clock. Howell then hit a 3-ball and Westbrooks recorded
consecutive buckets in the final two minutes to stake the
Mountaineers to a nine-point edge at the break.
The
Leopards came out of halftime on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 35
sparked by eight points from Garner and six from Cristin Zavocki.
Melissa Downey then handed Lafayette a 37-35 edge at 10:57 only to
see the Mountaineers go on a 10-2 run to reclaim a six-advantage
with 6:26 remaining. Dunn fueled the run with four points.
Lafayette responded once again to score 13 of the next 19 points to
grab a one-point edge on Virgin's layup with 3:49 left, but the
Mount took over the rest of the way to earn its second win of the
year.
Dunn
finished the game with nine points, five rebounds and three steals
while Oliver recorded eight points and four assists in the
win.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Pennsylvania.
Game time is 1 p.m.
