EMMITSBURG,
Md. Duquesne defeated Mount St. Mary's 66-59 in
non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Brianna
Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) paced the Mount (1-1) with
14 points, six rebounds and four assists while Hassanah Oliver
(Hillside, N.J./Hillside) added 11 points in the loss.
Keri
Pryor led the Dukes (3-0) with 20 points and Alex Gensler chipped
in 14 points off the bench in the winning effort.
Duquesne
used a strong run to pull away from the Mountaineers in the second
half after Mount St. Mary's tied the contest to earn the victory in
the first matchup between the two programs since 1997.
After the
Mount tied the game at 39, the Dukes rolled off the next 10 points
over a span of three minutes and 31 seconds to grab a 49-39
advantage.
Jaclyn
Babe started the decisive run on a traditional 3-point play at
12:40. Pryor then scored in the paint at 11:58 and Gensler nailed a
jumper 32 seconds later for a seven-point lead. Eve Pyle capped the
10-point outburst on a 3-pointer at 10:28.
Mount St.
Mary's cut the margin to 52-45 thanks to posting six out of the
next nine points off buckets from Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris
Catholic), Oliver and Shanda Anderson (Egg Harbor, N.J./Egg Harbor
Township), but then Gensler recorded back-to-back baskets and
Little drained a trey to grab a 14-point margin with 6:19 on the
clock. Oliver cut the deficit to 63-52 on a basket in the paint,
but Duquesne once again restored a double-digit advantage and went
on for the victory.
The Mount
jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the contest thanks to a jumper by
Dunn, a free throw by Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith
Second School) and a jumper by Shandra Andresson (Tallinn,
Estonia/Audentes School) at the 16:32 mark in the first
half.
Duquesne
responded to go on a 25-11 run thanks to take a 27-16 advantage
with 6:01 left until halftime. Fueled by six points by Gauthier,
the Mountaineers cut the margin to 31-27 going into the locker
room. Pryor had 14 points in the first half to fuel the
Dukes.
Mount St.
Mary's opened the second half by scoring 12 of the first 20 points
in the stanza to tie the game at 39 with 14:43 left in the contest.
Gauthier had five points and Westbrooks added four points in that
stretch. The Dukes then scored the next 10 points to go on for its
third win of the season.
Westbrooks
narrowly missed a double-double after finishing with eight points
and 11 rebounds. Andresson added a career-high seven points and
seven rebounds.
The Mount
outrebounded Duquesne 44-29 in the contest, including 21-5 on the
offensive glass.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Tuesday against Lafayette. Game time is
7 p.m.
