Emmitsburg, Md. (January 5, 2008)--Fairleigh Dickinson defeated
Mount St. Mary's, 65-62, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday
afternoon at the Knott Arena. Manny Ubilla scored a game-high 24
points to pace the Knights (5-7, 1-1 NEC) to the win while Chris
Vann led the Mountaineers (7-7, 3-1 NEC) in the loss.
Fairleigh Dickinson used an 11-to-4 run over the final 9:12 of
the first half to take a 24-21 lead at the break. The opening 20
minutes were not pretty to watch as Mount St. Mary's shot 29.6
percent from the field while Fairleigh Dickinson was 6-for-28 (21.4
percent).
The Mount surged ahead early in the second half, taking a 32-30
lead after a Shawn Atupem jumper with 14:24 remaining. Fairleigh
Dickinson answered with a 9-to-4 run, taking the lead for good on
an Eric Hazard three-pointer with 11:25 left in the game.
The Mount hung tough, cutting the deficit to 48-47 with 3:34 on
the clock after a pair of Vann free throws. Ubilla, however,
scored the next five points, including a three-pointer with 3:00 on
the clock, to extend the FDU lead to 53-47. The Knights were able
to hold off the Mount the rest of the way.
Ubilla was 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point
range for his game-high 24 points. Sean Baptiste (14), Bernell
Murray (11) and Hazard (10) also reached double figures in the
win. Vann led the Mount with 15 points while Sam Atupem added 12
in the loss. Markus Mitchell pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds
in the game for the Mount as well while Jeremy Goode finished with
seven points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals.
The Mount finished the game shooting 41.5 percent from the field
while holding Fairleigh Dickinson to 35.4 percent shooting. The
Knights, however, were 21-of-32 (.656) at the foul line compared to
13-of-16 for the Mount.
The Mount returns to action on Monday, January 7, with a 7:00
p.m. game at Oklahoma.
