Emmitsburg, Md. (January 31, 2008)--Jeremy Goode
tallied 18 points and 10 assists for his second career
double-double to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 97-60 win over St.
Francis (N.Y.) in Northeast Conference action at Knott Arena on
Thursday night. Five players scored in double figures for the
Mount (10-11, 6-4 NEC) in leading the team to its highest scoring
output in eight years.
Things started off auspiciously for the Mount when Will Holland
banked in a three-pointer on the team's first possession to give
the Mount a 3-2 lead. The Mount hit its first five shots of the
game, four from three-point range, to race to a 14-to-6 advantage
four minutes into the game. The Mount remained red-hot form the
field, going to the locker room with a 56-to-37 advantage after a
Jeremy Goode steal and jump shot at the buzzer.
The Mount shot 60.6 percent (20-of-33) from the field in the
opening half while the 56 points scored were the highest scoring
first half since a 57-point effort against Long Island on Jan. 5,
1994.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Mount opened the
second stanza with a 14-to-4 run to take a 70-41 advantage with
13:59 remaining. The Mount extended the lead to as many as 38
points before taking the 97-60 victory.
The 37-point victory was the Mount's biggest in margin of victory
since an 80-33 win over Widener on Jan. 21, 1989, the Mount's first
season at the Division I level. In addition, the 97 points scored
are the most by a Mount team since a 109-99 loss to Wagner on Jan.
22, 2000.
Goode finished with 18 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in 28
minutes of action for his second career double-double. It is the
second time in his career he has reached double-figures in assists
as well. The Mount had five players in total reach double figures
in scoring. It is the second straight game the Mount has achieved
that feat. Chris Vann (17), Will Holland (16), Kelly Beidler (14)
and Shawn Atupem (12) also reached the double-figure plateau. The
12-point, six-rebound effort were both career highs for Atupem.
Marcus Williams paced the Terriers (5-17, 2-9 NEC) with 15 points
while Bass Yessoufou added 11 points and seven boards.
"We've been trying to push the basketball and stay on the attack on
the offensive end as much as the defensive end," said head coach
Milan Brown.
The Mount shot a season-high 58.1 percent from the floor in the
game, including 11-of-20 (.550) from three-point range. The Mount
held the Terriers to 34.0 percent shooting, including 1-of-12
(.083) from three-point range.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when Robert Morris
visits Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game. The game is the Mount's
Bicentennial game with former head coach Jim Phelan receiving a
Bicentennial Award at halftime.
