Brooklyn, N.Y. (May 6, 2007)--Andrew Germuth
tossed a complete-game five-hitter to lead Mount St. Mary's past
Long Island, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep of the
four-game series. The win extended the Mount's win streak to a
school-record seven games.
Long Island starter Rich Moran held the Mount (30-17, 16-4 NEC)
without a hit for the first five innings of the game. Matt Eiden
broke up the no-hit bid with a single in the sixth. Ivor Hodgson
followed with a walk and the runners moved up on the bases on a
wild pitch. Senior Joe Hayes then came through with a clutch
two-run single to give the Mount a 2-0 lead. Justus Yocum pinch
ran for Hayes and scored on Josh Vittek's RBI double.
The Mount broke the game open with five runs in the top of the
seventh. After Vittek walked with the bases loaded to make the
score 4-0, Eric Smith tripled to plate three more runs for a 7-0
lead. Smith then scored on an LIU error to give the Mount an 8-0
advantage.
Long Island scored in the bottom of the seventh on a Johnny
Neckar RBI single, but Germuth shut down the Blackbirds the rest of
the way.
Germuth improved to 7-4 on the season, striking out seven while
walking no one in the complete-game victory. Moran allowed seven
runs in 6.2 innings to take the loss for the Blackbirds. Eiden
finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Mount
offense.
The Mount maintained its two-game lead over Quinnipiac in the
Northeast Conference standings with the victory. The Mount hosts
Quinnipiac next weeked for a four-game series beginning with a
nine-inning game at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at E.T. Straw Family
Stadium on campus.
Game Notes...The Mount's seven-game win streak
is the best in school history since the Mount moved to Division I
in 1989...It breaks the previous mark of six set earlier this
season and in 2004...The Mount has won eight straight road games
and is 13-1 over its past 14 games on the road...Overall, the Mount
has won 13 of its past 14 games and is 18-2 over the past
20...Since opening the season 3-9, the Mount is 27-8 over the past
35 games...The Mount allowed just five runs in the four-game series
with the Blackbirds.
