Emmitsburg, Md. (May 11, 2007)--Quinnipiac
powered past Mount St. Mary's, 14-6, in a Northeast Conference
matchup at Straw Family Stadium on campus on Friday afternoon. The
Bobcats (22-14-1, 15-6 NEC) used an 18-hit attack to snap the
Mount's seven-game win streak. The Mount (30-18, 16-5 NEC) saw its
lead in the Northeast Conference cut to one game with the loss.
The Bobcats appeared to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first
on a home run by Randy Gress, however, after the umpires conferred,
they called the ball foul. Mount starter Dustin Pease then retired
Gress on a grounder to short to end the inning.
Mount St. Mary's took the lead in the bottom of the first when
Josh Vittek cracked a solo home run to right. It was Vittek's 10th
long ball of the year, moving him into a tie for first in the
conference with teammate Ryan Murray and Quinnipiac teammates Jeff
Mainetti and Gress.
The Mount lead was short-lived, however, as Quinnipiac scored
four runs in the second and seven more in the third to take a
commanding 11-1 lead. Wilson Matos blasted a three-run homer in
the second to give the Bobcats a 3-1 advantage while Ryan Rizzo
added an RBI single in the inning.
Quinnipiac broke the game open with a seven-run fourth. Key
hits in the inning included a three-run homer from Rizzo and a
two-run double by Bryn Doyle.
The Mount answered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom
of the fourth. Matt Trusch connected for his second home run of
the year and Ivor Hodgson added his sixth of the season later in
the inning. After Quinnipiac scored an unearned run in the top of
the fifth, the Mount's Stephan Fay rapped a two-run double to cut
the deficit to 12-5.
The Mount added another run in the seventh on a solo home run by
Eric Smith, his sixth of the season, but Quinnipiac sealed the win
with a pair of runs in the ninth. Gress had an RBI double in the
ninth and the final run scored on a Mount error.
Smith went 5-for-5 with two runs scored to pace the Mount
offense in the game. Smith has 189 career hits at the Mount, three
shy of breaking the school's all-time hit record. Hodgson, Trusch
and Matt Eiden added two hits each in the loss.
Quinnipiac lead-off hitter John Delaney went 4-for-6 with three
runs scored while Matos was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Rizzo added
four RBI while Gress finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and three
RBI in the victory.
The teams continue the four-game series tomorrow with a
doubleheader beginning at noon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on
campus.
