Emmitsburg, Md. (May 1, 2007)---Mount St.
Mary's defeated Coppin State, 14-2, on Tuesday afternoon in a
non-conference matchup at the E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
With the victory, the Mount (26-17) set a school record for wins in
a season in the Division I era. The 26 wins break the school
record set in 2004 when the Mount finished 25-18.
Drew Counselman and Joe Hayes each homered in the win as the
Mount scored 10 or more runs for the second straight game and the
fourth time over the past seven contests.
Counselman, who blasted a grand slam to cap a five-run third
inning that gave the Mount a 12-1 lead, finished 2-for-3 with two
runs scored and four RBI. He has three home runs on the season.
Hayes, a senior, finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI in
the game. It was the first collegiate home run for Hayes.
The Mount scored five times in the bottom of the first to take
control of the contest. Justus Yocum and Ivor Hodgson had
back-to-back doubles to open the inning and give the Mount a 1-0
advantage. Josh Vittek added an RBI single while Matt Trusch
plated two runs with a base hit up the middle. Matt Eiden's
sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring in the inning.
Eric Smith chipped in a sacrifice fly in the second for his
team-leading 49th RBI of the year. Stephan Fay added an RBI double
in the frame for a 7-1 Mount lead. The Mount put the game away
with a five-run third inning. Eiden had an RBI single to open the
scoring in the inning before Counselman's grand slam.
Hayes added his two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for the
Mount. Hodgson, Counselman, Fay and Trusch each had two hits in
the win.
Sophomore Jimmy Mudgett (2-0) allowed one hit with one strikeout
in one inning of work to earn the victory. Kent Worthington
pitched two scoreless innings for the Mount in relief. Harry
Williams was 2-for-3 to pace Coppin State while DeShawn Daniel
scored both runs.
The Mount, which leads the Northeast Conference with a 12-4
league record, returns to NEC play with a four-game series at Long
Island beginning on Friday afternoon.
Game Notes...Eric Smith was hit by a pitch in
the third inning...It was Smith's 13th hit batsman this season,
breaking the Mount's single-season record...The Mount is 14-2 over
its past six games and has won the past three...Mount St. Mary's is
23-8 over its past 31 games after starting the season 3-9.
