Emmitsburg, Md. (April 24, 2007)--Mount St.
Mary's scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 22-7
win over Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday afternoon at Straw
Family Stadium on campus. The Mount belted five home runs in the
game, including back-to-back-to-back homers in the bottom of the
first. The Mount has won four straight games to improve to 21-16
on the season.
The Mount broke the game open early as the first six batters
reached base safely. Drew Counselman, Ivor Hodgson and Josh Vittek
each singled to load the bases to start the inning. Eric Smith
followed with a two-run single to left field and Ryan Murray
blasted a three-run homer to right field to give the Mount a 5-0
advantage. Joe Hayes followed with a double to right center
field. Matt Trusch moved Hayes to third with a fly out to right,
and Mike Gioioso reached on an error to plate Hayes. Matt Eiden
then singled to put runners on first and second and send Counselman
to the plate.
Counselman connected for a three-run homer to left field to give
the Mount a 9-0 lead. Hodgson and Vittek each hit solo home runs
to give the Mount back-to-back-to-back homers and an 11-0 lead
after one inning of play. The Mount sent 16 batters to the plate
in the inning, scoring 11 times on 11 hits as the team was batting
for 33 minutes.
The Retrievers (9-26) scored a pair of runs in the top of the
third and cut the Mount's lead to 12-5 on Will Delawter's three-run
homer to right-center field in the top of the fifth. The Mount
answered Delawter's home run by scoring seven times in the bottom
of the inning to take a commanding 19-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hodgson had an RBI double and Smith
an RBI single to start the scoring. Matt Trusch added a sacrifice
fly before Stephan Fay blasted a pinch-hit three run home run to
center field. Counselman rounded out the scoring in the inning
with an RBI triple.
Hodgson paced the Mount, going 4-for-6 with four runs scored,
two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Counselman, who came within a
double of hitting for the cycle, was 3-for-5 with four runs scored
and four RBI in the game. Vittek added three hits and two RBI
while Smith chipped in three hits and three RBI. Murray, who
belted his Northeast Conference-leading 10th home run, was 2-for-3
with three runs scored and three RBI to move his average to a
team-leading .390 on the year.
Freshman Max Brittenham earned his first collegiate win in his
third start of the season, striking out four while allowing five
runs in five innings of work.
Delawter was 3-for-5 with a home runs and four RBI to pace UMBC
while Scott Peddicord added three hits in the loss.
The Mount returns to action tomorrow night with a 7:00 p.m. game
at Georgetown.
Game Notes...The Mount had season highs in runs
(22), hits (23) and home runs (5) in the game. The 22 runs scored
were the most by a Mount team since a 27-10 win over
Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 29, 2004...Mount St. Mary's has won
nine of the past 10 games and is 18-7 over the past 25
contests...The Mount is now 9-25 all-time vs. UMBC since moving to
NCAA Division I in 1989...The win snapped a four-game losing streak
to the Retrievers...Eleven different players had a hit for the
Mount in the game, including all nine starters.
