New Britain, Conn. (April 22, 2007)--Andrew
Germuth tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Mount St. Mary's past
Central Connecticut State, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in the final
game of a four-game Northeast Conference series. The Mount won the
final three games of the set to improve to 20-16 overall and 9-3 in
the NEC. The Mount is in first place in the conference standings,
one-half game ahead of second place Sacred Heart.
Germuth dominated throughout the day, taking a no-hitter into
the seventh inning while striking out a career-high 10 batters. He
did not allow more than one CCSU baserunner in any inning to
improve to 5-3 on the season. It was Germuth's first career
nine-inning complete game at the Mount.
The Mount struck for three runs in the top of the fourth inning
to grab a 3-0 advantage. Ivor Hodgson led off the inning with a
solo home run, his third of the season. Josh Vittek followed with
a single before Central Connecticut starter Evan Scribner retired
the next two batters. Mount St. Mary's catcher Stephan Fay came
through with a clutch two-out double to plate Ryan Murray, who
reached on a fielder's choice. Matt Trusch then drove home Fay for
the final run of the inning.
The Mount added a single run in the sixth when Eric Smith
singled, stole second, and scored on Trusch's single through the
left side.
Trusch went 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace the offense while the
top six hitters in the lineup added one hit each. Scribner allowed
four runs and nine hits while striking out 10 in eighth innings of
work for the Blue Devils (15-10, 6-6 NEC).
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. game
against UMBC at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
Game Notes...The Mount and CCSU entered the
weekend as the top two teams in the NEC standings...The Mount is
17-7 over its past 24 games and has won eight of its past
nine...The Mount has 20 wins in a season for the second straight
year and just the third time since moving to NCAA Division I in
1989...The school record of 25 victories was set in 2004 when the
team finished 25-18...Last year, the Mount finished 23-24 on the
season.
