Mount Wins Pair of One-Run Game to Complete Four-Game Sweep of Wagner

The Mount St. Mary's baseball team won a pair of one-run games at Wagner on Saturday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep of the Northeast Conference series. The Mount earned a 6-5 win in 10 innings in the opening game before earning a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Eric Smith's solo home run to lead off the 10th lifted the Mount to a 6-5 victory. It was Smith's fourth home run of the season.

The Mount (16-15, 6-2 NEC) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the game with three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth. In the fifth, Drew Counselman's single through the left side plated Justus Yocum with the first run of the game and Smith added a two out double to left center field to make the score 3-0. In the sixth, Counselman added a two-run single up the middle.

Wagner (8-20, 3-5 NEC) responded with a five-run sixth inning that featured three home runs. Peter Delleani led off the sixth with a solo home run. After a single by Vin Avella and a walk to Ed Sudol, Matt Mastrianni blasted a three-run shot to right field to cut the Mount's lead to 5-4. With two outs, Chris Drecshel's solo shot to left tied the game at five apiece.

Smith and Counselman each went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the victory while Matt Eiden was 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Ivor Hodgson allowed four runs and sturck out six in a no decision for the Mount. Mike Matta pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Mastrianni was 2-for-5 with three RBI to pace the Wagner offense while starter Joe Testa struck out 11 in eight innings in the no decision.

In the second game, the Mount scored three times in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead and pitchers Andrew Germuth and Matt made the lead stand.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the first when Joseph Digeronimo scored on a Mount error. In the second, Kevin McDonnell scored on another Mount error.

The Mount took the lead with three runs in the third. Brandon Woods walked and advanced to third on a pair of ground outs. Hodgson singled to plate Woods and the Mount took the lead on a two-run homer by Josh Vittek.

That was all the offense the Mount needed as Germuth and Matta held Wagner off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Germuth allowed two runs and struck out three in 6.2 innings to earn the win. Matta pitched out of a two out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to earn his third save of the season.
