Softball Swept by Sacred Heart

The Mount St. Mary's softball team was swept by Sacred Heart in a a doubleheader at the MSM Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. Sacred Heart took the opener, 2-1 in eight innings, before capturing the second game, 2-0. Lisa Curerri was 3-for-6 in the twinbill to pace the Mount.

Sacred Heart (10-16, 3-5 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Jacqui Riley doubled with one out and Amanda Fitzsimon followed with a base hit. Riley then scampered home when the ball got away from the Mount's right fielder.

Mount St. Mary's (9-21, 3-7 NEC) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Allie Vadas opened the inning with an infield single to shortstop and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Ashley Monsour singled up the middle. Vadas scored on the play when interference was called on Sacred Heart's shortstop. Jessica Burke followed with a double to the center field fence to put runners on second and third with one out, but Sacred Heart pitcher Megan Spehar struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

Spehar then took matters into her own hands, belting a solo home run to left field with two outs in the eighth for the winning run. Mount St. Mary's pitcher Jamie Fowler had retired the previous 15 batters in a row prior to Spehar's home run. The Mount threatened in the bottom half of the inning. Kelli Seger doubled to open the frame and Ashley Monsour was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Spehar, however, got a pop out and two strike outs to close the game.

Lisa Curreri was 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Mount in the game. Fowler allowed three hits and struck out five in the complete game loss. Spehar had 10 strikeouts in the complete game victory for Sacred Heart.

In the nightcap, Bethany Lemenager struck out five and allowed just three hits to earn a 2-0 shutout for Sacred Heart. Amanda Bradley's RBI double to left in the top of the second was all the offense the Pioneers needed in the game. In the fourth, Sacred Heart's Melissa Mezzanotte gave her team a 2-0 lead with an inside-the-park home run. Mezzanotte blasted a shot off the top of the center field fence that stayed in play, and she raced around the bases for the run.

Reanna Tuczynski allowed two runs in the complete game loss for the Mount, striking out three. Amanda Burk, Vadas and Curreri each had a hit in the game. Mezzanotte was 2-for-3 with her inside-the-park home run to pace Sacred Heart.

The Mount doubleheader vs. Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow has been postponed.
