Emmitsburg, Md. (April 11, 2007)--Towson scored seven unearned
runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 9-3,
in a non-conference matchup at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus
on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore starter Jimmy Mudgett struck out
seven in four innings of work to pace the Mount (12-15).
Mudgett started the game in style, striking out the side in the
top of the first. Mudgett pitched the first four innings, striking
out seven and not allowing a hit in the no-decision.
The Mount got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom
of the second. Eric Smith reached on an error and moved to third
on Ryan Murray's single up the middle. After Smith was caught
stealing on an attempted double steal, Matt Trusch singled to score
Murray.
In the fourth, Josh Vittek walked and moved to third on a Smith
base hit. Smith moved to second on a Ryan Murray ground out to
third, putting runners on second and third with one out. Stephen
Fay then grounded to second and Vittek beat the throw home for a
2-0 Mount lead.
The Mount pitchers made the lead stand, taking a no-hitter into
the seventh inning. Max Brittenham relieved Mudgett in the fifth
and pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Towson (13-18) tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the
eighth. Steve Rice reached on an error to start the inning and
Kevin Collins followed with a base hit to left. After a Hans
Falkenham sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, Brian Conley
grounded out to second to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ryan Schreiter
then reached on a error that allowed Collins to score the
game-tying run.
Towson sealed the win with a seven-run 11th inning. Steve
Yarsinski reached on an error to start the inning and Gary Helmick
followed with a double to left field to put runners on second and
third with no outs. Nick Natoli was then retired on a grounder to
short and pinch-hitter Greg Furmanek was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Ivor Hodgson came on in relief for the Mount and
struck out Collins for the second out. Falkenhan came up next and
hit a slow roller to third that was bobbled, allowing the go-ahead
run to score. Conley followed with a grand slam to left to make
the score 7-2. Schreiter added an RBI double and Yarsinsky an RBI
single to round out the scoring in the inning.
Trusch's RBI single in the bottom of the inning rounded out the
scoring.
Murray and Trusch each went 2-for-5 in the game for the Mount
while A.J. Tinnirella was 3-for-5 to pace Towson. Conley finished
with five RBI in the win. Corey Cascio allowed an unearned run in
two innings of work to earn the victory for the Tigers.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, April 13, with a
3:00 p.m. game at Wagner in the first game of a four-game
series.
