Emmitsburg, Md. (March 6, 2007)--Mount St.
Mary's opened the 2007 men's lacrosse season with a 19-5 loss to
No. 10 Delaware at the Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Tuesday
afternoon. The Blue Hens (5-0) scored nine unanswered goals to
start the game en route to the win. The Mount's Joe Bello scored
twice in the loss.
The Blue Hens struck first on a Dan Deckelbaum tally with 5:56
left in the first quarter. That started a five-goal run to close
the quarter for Delaware. Martin Cahill scored with 3:17 left, and
Chris Hichborn scored twice in a span of 40 second to make it 4-0.
Kevin Kaminski's score with 18 seconds left in the first quarter
gave Delaware a 5-0 advantage.
The Blue Hens continued to pour it on as Hichborn, Beau Davis,
Vincent Giordano and Kaminski each scored in the second quarter to
make the score 9-0 with 3:31 left in the first half. Bello got the
Mount on the scoreboard when he converted a Ben Mundorf pass with
1:59 left in the half for the Mount's first goal of the season.
Deckelbaum and Hichborn staked the Blue Hens to an 11-1 lead
before the Mount scored three of the next four goals to cut the
deficit to 12-4 with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter. Dave
Orban, Mundorf and Bello provided the Mount scores. Freshman Tim
Henry dished out an assist on Orban's goal for his first collegiate
point. Bello's goal at the 2:31 mark made it 12-4, but Deckelbaum
scored 11 seconds later to give Delaware a 13-4 lead heading into
the fourth quarter.
The Blue Hens scored the first six goals of the final quarter on
scores by Jordan Hall, Brett Manney, Giordano, Marty Kupprion,
Cahill and D.J. Widlake. The Mount's Peter Kerwin's found the back
of the cage on an assist from Charlie White with 20 seconds left in
the game provided the final of 19-5.
Hichborn paced Delaware with four goals while Deckelbaum and
Kaminski each added a hat trick in the win. The Blue Hens had 10
different goal scorers in the game. Bello led the Mount with a
pair of goals while Mundorf chipped in a goal and an assist.
Alex Smith won 22-of-26 face-offs for Delaware and collected a
game-high eight ground balls. Mount goalkeeper Joe Zolezzi made 11
saves in 57:30 of action while Tommy Scherr made five saves and
allowed four goals in 50 minutes for Delaware.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, March 10, when No. 17
Bucknell visits the Mount for a 1:00 p.m. game.
