Ryan Murray's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning
capped a four-run rally in the Mount's 4-3 win over Bucknell in the
second game of a doubleheader at the Mount's Straw Family Stadium.
Bucknell (6-10) captured the first game, 7-0. The Mount improves
to 8-11 on the season with the doubleheader split.
After generating just two hits over the first seven innings
against Bucknell starter Mathew Wilson, the Mount rallied off the
Bucknell bullpen for for runs in the eighth to earn the 4-3 win in
the nightcap of the twinbill. With one out, Mike Gioioso singled
to center field to start the rally. After a fly out, Drew
Counselman followed with a single through the left side to put
runners at first and second.
Gioioso then scored on a Bucknell error that put runners on
first and second again. After Counselman moved to third on a wild
pitch, Eric Smith singled to right to cut the Bucknell lead to
3-2. Jason Buursma then relieved Nathan Mittag, and was greeted by
Murray's double to right that plated Josh Vittek and Smith with the
go-ahead runs.
Bucknell wouldn't go down easily, putting the leadoff runner on
third with no outs on a Mount error. Winning pitcher Dustin Pease
(3-2) then sturck out the next batter, but walked Austin Turban to
put runners on the corners with one out. Pease then enduced a
game-ending double-play to cinch the Mount victory.
Smith finished the second game 2-for-4 at the plate with a run
scored and an RBI for the Mount while Gioioso went 2-for-3 with a
run scored. Pease allowed two runs in 4.1 innings of relief to
earn the victory while starting pitcher Costa Kapothanasis allowed
one run in 4.2 innings in his second start of the season.
Bucknell was paced by Austin Turban's 2-for-4 effort with three
RBI in the second game. Wilson did not allow a run while striking
out five in seven innings in the no decision.
In the opening game, Bucknell's Matt Curry cruised to a 7-0 win,
striking out eight in 5.2 innings. Jason Buursma pitched 1.1
innings of scoreless relief in the win.
The Bison scored a pair of runs in both the second and third
innings to take command of the game, 4-0. Mark Angelo's RBI single
opened the scoring and Shawn Hirsch added a sacrifice fly to give
Bucknell a 2-0 lead in the second. In the third, Buursma and Ryan
Gryskevicz each had RBI doubles for the 4-0 advantage. Ben Yoder
added an RBI single in the fourth inning and Bucknell scored a pair
of runs in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Bucknell banged out 15 hits in the second game as Yoder and
Gryskevicz each had three hits in the win. Murray and Counselman
each had a hit in the loss for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 27, when
Navy visits for a 3:30 p.m. game at Straw Family Stadium.
