Harrisonburg, Va. (November 24,
2007)--Sophomore point guard Jeremy Goode (Charlotte,
N.C./Providence Day) scored a career high 27 points, but it was not
enough as James Madison earned an 85-73 win over Mount St. Mary's
in non-conference action at the JMU Convocation Center on Saturday
afternoon. The loss drops the Mount's record to 0-3 on the
season.
Goode scored 16 of his 27 points in the
first half to pace the Mount. Trailing early in the half, Goode
scored five straight points to cap a 10-2 run to give the Mount an
18-16 lead with 9:06 left in the opening half. The half remained
tight the remainder of the way with the Dukes (3-1) going to the
locker room with a 40-38 advantage. There were nine ties and four
lead changes in the half.
James Madison came out strong in the
second half, taking a 47-40 lead 1:37 into the half. The Mount
answered with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 47-46, but James
Madison countered with an 11-2 run of its own to grab a 10-point
lead. The Mount was able to cut the gap to five, 68-63, after a
pair of Chris Vann (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) three-pointers with
5:51 left in the game, but the Dukes were able to hold the Mount at
bay the rest of the way.
"In the second half, they tried to crowd
us defensively," said Mount head coach Milan Brown. "We scored,
but we had a lot of turnovers in the second half. That five minute
stretch really hurt us. It's had to get over the hump when you get
down."
Terrance Carter paced James Madison with
20 points and eight rebounds while Juwann James (15) and Dazzmond
Thornton (14) also reached double figures. James Madison shot 66.7
percent from the floor and hit 20-of-21 (.952) from the charity
stripe in the second half.
Goode was 10-of-14 from the floor to
record his career high 27 points. He added seven assists and five
boards in the loss. Vann finished with 19 points, including 5-of-5
from three-point range. The Mount shot 56.0 percent from the field
in the game and was 6-of-9 (.667) from three-point range.
The Mount returns to action on Monday,
November 26, when American visits Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m.
game.
