Robert Morris edged Mount St. Mary's, 81-78, in overtime at the
Sewall Center on Saturday night in Northeast Conference action.
Mount St. Mary's senior Mychal Kearse scored a career high 21
points in the loss. Mount freshman guard Jeremy Goode sent the
game into overtime with a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to
force overtime.
In overtime, the Colonials jumped to a 79-75 lead behind a pair
of conventional three-point plays. Tony Lee opened the overtime
with a three-point play for a 74-71 Colonial lead while A.J.
Jackson's three-point play with 1:55 left made the score 77-73.
After a Gus Durr jumper and a pair of free throws by Derek Coleman,
Kearse drained a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to cut Robert
Morris' lead to 79-78.
Jackson converted two free throws for an 81-78 lead, allowing
the Mount the final possession in overtime to try to tie the game.
On the final possession, Goode shot a double-clutch three-pointer
which was just off the mark, allowing Robert Morris (12-5, 4-4 NEC)
to earn the win.
Mount St. Mary's (6-13, 5-3 NEC) opened the game with an 8-0 run
behind six points from Durr. The Mount extended the lead to 42-31,
but Colson Senat drained a three-pointer at the buzzer at the half
to cut the Mount lead to 42-34.
In the second half, the Mount held a 50-41 lead before a 14-4
run by the Colonials was capped by a Tony Lee lay-up for a 55-54
Robert Morris lead with 9:28 on the clock. The Mount responded
with six straight points, capped by a Goode three-pointer. From
there, the game was back-and-forth before the Colonials took a
71-68 lead with eight seconds left in regulation, setting up
Goode's game-tying three-pointer.
Kearse finished 10-of-12 from the field for his career-best 21
points to lead the Mount. Durr added a season-high 16 points while
Goode finished with 11 points and eight assists. Freshman Kelly
Beidler chipped in 10 points for the Mount.
Jackson led Robert Morris with 20 points while Jeremy Chappell
added 18 points and Lee 16 points, nine rebounds and nine
assists.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 27, when Wagner
visits Knott Arena.
