American downed Mount St. Mary's, 59-46, in a non-conference
matchup at Knott Arena on Monday night. The Mount was held to 30.4
percent shooting in the game.
After the Eagles (4-2) jumped to a 7-2 lead over the first six
minutes, the Mount used a 9-0 run to take its biggest lead of the
game, 11-7, with 11:34 left in the first half. Vann knocked down a
three-pointer with 6:56 left in the half to give the Mount (1-4) a
17-14 lead, but American closed the half with a 15-0 run to take a
29-17 advantage. The Mount missed its final eight shots of the
half and shot 6-of-24 (.250) from the field over the first 20
minutes.
Mount St. Mary's came out strong to start the second half with a
13-4 run to cut the deficit to 33-30 with 14:53 left in the game.
Freshman Jeremy Goode drilled a three-pointer with 12:28 remaining
to cut American's lead to 37-34, but Brian Gilmore and Andre Ingram
countered with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Eagles a
nine-point edge. The closest the Mount would get the rest of the
way was 51-44 with 1:49 remaining.
Ingram scored a game-high 15 points and added seven rebounds
while Derrick Mercer added 11 points and seven assists to pace
American. Vann was the only Mount player in double figures with 11
points. Freshmen Will Holland and Goode added nine points
each.
The Mount shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the field in the
game while American shot 20-of-46 (.435). The Eagles had 21
turnovers and the Mount 15 in the contest.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, November 29,
with a 9:00 p.m. home game vs. Maine at Knott Arena.
Game Notes...American now owns a 29-26
advantage in the all-time series...The Mount hit 6-of-12 at the
line and is shooting 57.8 percent at the charity stripe on the
season.
