Men’s Rugby Handles Mary Washington in Emmitsburg with 34-25 Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 14, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's men's rugby earned a hard-fought 34–25 victory over Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Echo Field, using a strong first half and several key tries early in the second half to hold off a late push from the visitors.

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring seven minutes into the match when Logan Wild connected on a penalty kick to give the Mount a 3–0 lead. Mary Washington answered five minutes later with a penalty kick of their own to even the score at 3–3. The Mount quickly responded with its first major breakthrough in the 20th minute. Hayden McKay powered over for a try at the 19:30 mark, and Wild's successful conversion pushed the lead to 10–3.

Mary Washington answered midway through the first half, crossing the try line at the 23-minute mark and adding the conversion to pull even at 10–10. Mount St. Mary's regained control shortly after with a strong attacking stretch. At the 26-minute mark, Raylon Murray finished off a Mount drive with a try, and Wild again converted to give Mount a 17–10 advantage.

The Mount continued to apply pressure late in the half. McKay scored his second try of the day at 31:30, finishing off another Mount attack. Wild remained perfect on conversions, adding two more points to extend the lead to 24–10. Mary Washington added a late penalty kick at the 36-minute mark, but Mount carried a 24–13 advantage into halftime after an energetic opening forty minutes.

Mount St. Mary's wasted little time extending its lead after the break. Just over three minutes into the second half, Joe Sharrock broke through for a try at 43:30 to push the Mount ahead 29–13. Less than a minute later, Murray added his second try of the match, finishing a quick Mount surge at the 44:30 mark to give Mount its largest lead of the day.

Mary Washington battled back midway through the half. The Eagles scored a try with a successful conversion at the 49-minute mark to cut into the deficit. They added another try in the 60th minute to bring the score to 34–25, setting up a tense final stretch.

Despite the pressure, Mount's defense held firm over the closing minutes. The Mount limited Mary Washington's attacking opportunities and controlled possession late to secure the nine-point victory in front of the home crowd at Echo Field.

McKay and Murray each scored two tries to lead the Mount offensively, while Wild contributed three successful conversions and a penalty kick to account for nine points on the day. Sharrock added a second-half try as Mount finished with five tries overall in the match.

With the win, Mount St. Mary's showed resilience and attacking depth, building a strong first-half advantage and doing enough defensively down the stretch to seal the result against a determined Mary Washington side.
