New Rochelle, NY - (February 5, 2026) - Mount St. Mary's women's basketball secured a big road win on the road against Iona, 63-62. A deep three-pointer from
Giana Hoddinott finished off the Gaels with six seconds remaining in the contest. The Mount moves to 11-12 on the season, and 7-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for the season.
Alana Powell dominated on offense, dropping a new career high in points with 22. She also tallied one assist, one steal, and three free-throws.
Amber Bullard had a solid showing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Hoddinott wasn't far behind Bullard, with nine points and six assists.
Berlynn Carlson helped control the paint, grabbing six points and four rebounds, while
Zaria Harleaux matched her rebounds and dropped five points for the contest.
The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Gaels 35-34, with 11 offensive boards to their nine. The team totaled 26 of 61 shots from the field, hitting five from behind the three-point line. The Mount passed the ball well in the game, with 14 assists compared to Iona's 13.
The Mount found themselves outscored 19-17 in the first quarter, as the Gaels' Zoey Ward dropped 12 points. Powell fought back against Ward's offense with seven points of her own in the opening quarter. Iona scored the first points of the game, followed by one of Bullard's patented hook shot in the paint to even the game. Both teams scored early and often with eight lead changes in just the first quarter.
Iona held the lead just over seven minutes of the second quarter before a pull up jumper from
Giana Hoddinott gave the Mount the lead. After a 4-0 run by Iona's Ward, Bullard and Powell were able to answer with two layups of their own to tie the lead with 1:28 left in the first half. Powell drained a three-pointer followed by an Iona free throw, and the Mount headed to the locker room leading 37-35.
The Mount came out of the half strong, with a 4-0 run before a layup from Iona. The Mount won the third quarter, 16-15 with Powell leading the charge with five points in the quarter. The fourth quarter of the game showed to be the lowest scoring quarter of the game. The Mount went into the final bout with a one point lead, 53-50. Iona made two shots before a Mount response.
Nyodie Guerard hit a three followed by a Bullard layup to give the Mount the lead with five minutes remaining in the game. A two minute scoring drought was ended by Iona going 1-2 at the charity stripe. The Gaels followed this up with a second chance layup scored by Isabellah Middleton to give Iona a three-point lead.
After a Mount timeout, Hoddinott brought the deficit to one with a pull up jump shot in the paint. In a fouling situation, the Mount sent Iona to the line where the Gaels made two free throws. Mount St. Mary's calls a timeout with 13 seconds left in the game. The ball goes to Hoddinott who steps back off the defender and drops the three point dagger with five seconds remaining in the game. Unable to answer, Iona misses a pull up jumper with the buzzer sounding, finishing a tightly contested battle in New Rochelle.
The Mount continues its two-game road trip in Fairfield, CT against Sacred Heart at 1PM. The Mount then returns home to take on the Fairfield Stags on Thursday at 7PM in Knott Arena.
