Pioneer’s Second Half Stifles Men’s Basketball in Connecticut

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 27, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's men's basketball fell on Saturday night to Sacred Heart by a score of 77-69. With the loss, the Mountaineer's fall to 14-16 on the year while facing off against Fairfield on Sunday, March 1 to determine MAAC Tournament seeding.
 
Luke McEldon led the way for the Mount in Connecticut on Friday night, battling through a second half injury while scoring 19 points and grabbing a team-leading 11 rebounds, with five boards coming in the opposition's paint. Arlandus Keyes scored 17 points for the Mount, dropping three 3-pointers in the process. And Xavier Lipscomb recorded 10 points against the Pioneers, grabbing 10 rebounds in the process.
 
The Mountaineers started the game on a 7-2 run through the first five minutes of the first half, with McEldon and Trey Deveaux combing for scores in the paint followed by a knock-down three from Keyes.
 
Through the middle part of the first half, the Pioneers started to claw back into the game, cutting the score to 23-17 at the under-8 media timeout. A McEldon score in the paint made increased the lead to 25-19, but a made three-pointer from Sacred Heart's Ralph-Beyer cut the lead back to three.
 
Sacred Heart tied the game with 1:38 left in the half right before Keyes converted on back-to-back trips to the paint, sending the Mount into halftime with a narrow 32-31 lead.
 
The Pioneers began the second half on 7-0 run before Keyes converted from beyond the three-point arc to cutoff the advancing Sacred Heart offense.
 
Mount St. Mary's made a huge run before the under-12 media timeout, with McEldon scoring six points in as many minutes. Keyes added a two-pointer to the score during the run while Anastasios Rozakeas converted on a second chance ball in the paint to cut the Pioneer lead to 47-45.
 
Even with a resilient Mount offense, Sacred Heart kept the foot on the gas, increasing their lead to an eight point, 64-56 lead. Rozakeas converted on back-to-back three-pointers from the wing, cutting the Pioneer lead to two-points.
 
From then on, the Pioneer offense converted on opportune chances in the paint, extending the lead and rounding out the game.

The Mountaineers round out their Connecticut doubleheader on Sunday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m., facing off against Fairfield in a game that will break up sixth place in the conference and determine MAAC Tournament seeding.
