EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 25, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's baseball sets off for the Virginia coast on Friday for a three-game set against Norfolk State, with game one slated for a 3:00 p.m. start on February 27. After the Mount fell to UMass last weekend in a three-game sweep, the Mountaineers retain a 2-5 start to the season.
MOUNT UPDATE
In game one against Massachusetts,
Serigne Sarre hummed in the first innings of his Friday start, retiring eight batters through the first three innings while striking out two in the process. But the UMass bats began to work in the fourth, as the minutemen took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the inning.
In the top of the sixth,
Jackson Snyder came in to relieve, walking the lead-off man and allowing a UMass single while getting the first out on a ball to
Bryce Rudisill at first base.
Christian Pownall came in to relieve Snyder for a one-batter appearance, striking out the batter while making way for
JB Manarchuck's entrance, who promptly dispatched the last Minuteman batter of the inning with a swinging strikeout.
The Mount bats stayed cold until the nine-hole hitter,
Evan Meier led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a first pitch home run over the left field wall, tying the game at 1-1.
Scores remained frozen through the seventh inning until UMass exploded in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Later in the top of the ninth, the Minutemen extended the lead to 6-1 with the Mount bats due up in the bottom half of the inning.
Nathan Rodriguez led off the inning in a pinch-hit appearance, dispatching the ball to right-center for a leadoff double.
Sam Meyer bunted Rodriguez over to third while Meier singled through the outfield to drive the run in.
Alex Mendes singled to continue the roll while
Christian Bauman walked to load the bases.
Ty Fredo Singled through the infield, driving in two runs to drive the score to 6-4, but with two outs, the Mount batters could not complete a dramatic comeback.
In game one of the Saturday doubleheader, An error by the Minutemen catcher contributed to the Mount's first run, scored by
Alex Mendes. Meier increased the lead to 2-0 with a single scoring
David Stokely. In the fourth, Meier added a two-run double for a 4-1 Mountaineer lead. Down 4-2 in the seventh, UMass strung together with five runs to take over the lead. Homeruns by both teams – Mount's Fredo and UMass' Fox – tacked onto the final score.
During the second game on Saturday, Mendes scored twice to help the Mount jump out to a 3-0 lead. Bauman brought home
Joey Agar to assist in the early edge as well. UMass posted their first run in the third inning but took over in the sixth with a four-spot with two insurance runs in the seventh. The insurance proved vital to offset a
Bryce Rudisill homerun for the Mount. The third and final game of the UMass series ended in the top of the eighth when the lights at Blandair Park abruptly went out, causing the umpires to call the game for a lack of light with the Mount trailing by two runs.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Fredo leads the Mountaineers in batting average amongst qualified batters, recording a line of .348 while leading the team with eight hits and 10 RBIs. The third-year man from West Caldwell, New Jersey also leads the team with a 1.061 OPS, recording a team leading slugging percentage .609.
On the basepaths, both Fredo and Mendes have recorded perfect steal attempts, with the aforementioned Fredo going 5-5 in swipes while Mendes has gone 4-4 on stolen bags.
Josh Halcisak leads the starting corps with an ERA of 3.86 through 7.0 innings on the mound while striking out seven while recording a WHIP of 2.14.
Jackson Snyder continues to impress when coming into relief, maintaining 0.00 ERA while recording a WHIP of 1.29 through 2.1 innings of work.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SPARTANS
The Mountaineers opened their 2025 campaign with a three-game set against the Spartans, outscoring Norfolk State 20-0 across a Valentines Day doubleheader. They followed the Friday doubleheader with a 10-5 victory over the Spartans on February 15, opening the season with a sweep.
Fredo led the Mount batters from the plate in last year's opening series, going 7-13 with six RBIs, two walks, two stolen bases, and two home runs against the Spartans.
The trio of Sarre, DeRossi, and
Jakob Foster were all accredited with wins in the series, with Sarre notching 13 strikeouts while only allowing one hit and one walk in his first ever college start.

The Mountaineers and the Spartans have faced off against each other on nine occasions since 2010, with the Mount edging Norfolk State with an all-time record of 6-3, all played in the Tidewater.
