EMMITSBURG, MD (October 6, 2026) – Traveling to Upstate New York for a midweek match, Mount St. Mary's women's soccer has a high challenge to meet in the form of the Niagara Purple Eagles.
MOUNT UPDATE
Facing another tough opponent last weekend, the Mount fell 1-0 to the Marist Red Foxes in Emmitsburg.
Abby Makela shined in goal for the team, ending the match with a career high 14 saves. The sophomore has 78 for the season, which is the most in the Metro, and her saves per game ranks second in the conference.
On offense, the trio of
Erin Antone,
Cassidy Nichols, and
Caoume Valle each have two goals to share the team lead. The group will look to crack the scoreboard for the first time since the 2-1 victory over Rider.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES
Niagara made an early statement with wins over Quinnipiac and Iona to start conference play. Since then, the Purple Eagles added a 1-0 win over Siena and a 3-0 win over Saint Peter's to improve to 4-2 in the Metro. The team is tied for third in the league for goals allowed with 11, with keeper Julia Poissant supplying 37 saves. The offense has Caitlyn Gratton, who has scored eight of the team's 17 goals.
SERIES HISTORY
All matches between the sides fall under the scope of Metro play. Mount's most successful year was 2023, defeating Niagara 2-0 in the regular season and advancing past them in the postseason on penalties. Outside of that year, the Purple Eagles have gotten the better of the Mountaineers with three wins.
