Mount St. Mary's Uses Second Half Surge to Power Past Niagara, 68-58

Niagara University, N.Y. (January 19, 2026)—A strong second half propelled Mount St. Mary's to a 68-58 win at Niagara on Monday afternoon.  Arlandus Keyes led four Mountaineers in double figures with 15 points as the Mount rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to secure the win.  The Mount improves to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in the MAAC with the victory.

Trailing 34-30 at the half, the Mount opened the second half with a 16-to-3 run to build a nine-point advantage.  Luke McEldon scored the first six points of that stretch, Keyes the next five, and Anthony Arrington, Jr., capped the run with the final five points for a 46-37 lead with 12:42 remaining. 

Leading 49-42, Trey Deveaux hit a pair of free throws ahead of back-to-back triples from Keyes that pushed the margin to 15 (57-42) with just under seven minutes left.  The Mount led 64-47 after an Arrington, Jr., three-pointer with 3:14 on the clock.  Niagara scored the next nine points to trim the deficit to eight with a minute left, but would get no closer.

Keyes scored all of his team-high 15 points in the second half for the Mount, hitting 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range in the game.  McEldon tallied 12 points and six rebounds while Xavier Lipscomb (11) and Arrington, Jr. (10) also reached double figures.  Will Shortt led Niagara with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Mount St. Mary's outscored Niagara, 38-24, in the second half to rally for the win.  The Mount shot 13-of-26 (.500) from the field in the half, hitting 5-of-9 (.556) from three-point range.  For the game, the Mount finished shooting 44.2 percent (23-of-52) overall and 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc.

The Mount defense held Niagara (5-13, 2-6 MAAC) to 33.9 percent shooting in the game, including 8-of-29 (.276) in the second half.

Niagara opened the game with a 14-to-4 run before the Mountaineers scored eight in a row to make it a two-point game.  The Purple Eagles responded, building it's biggest lead of the game, 26-14, with 5:47 left in the half.  The Mount whittled away at the deficit with Arrington, Jr., scoring in the paint to make it a four-point game, 34-30, at the break.

NOTES:
  • The win gives the Mount a sweep of the Western New York trip for the second year in a row.
  • Mount St. Mary's has won the past four matchups with Niagara to take a 5-4 lead in the all-time series.
  • Xavier Lipscomb went 6-for-6 at the foul line an dis now shooting 97.7 percent (42-of-43) at the foul line in MAAC games.
  • It is the second consecutive game a strong second half propelled the Mount to the win.The Mount shot 60.0 percent in the second half while outscoring Canisius, 45-34, to rally for a 78-68 win on Saturday.
