EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 6, 2025) – Junior defender
Payton Meara found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career during the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer match against Merrimack. It ended up as silver lining for a tough showing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener, a match won 5-1 by the Warriors.
Meara's goal came off a set piece in the 89
th minute. A corner kick sent in by
Maddie MacDonald was received by
Joelle Hamel, who deposited a cross onto Meara's foot to prevent their opponents from earning the clean sheet.
Three goals by Merrimack in the first 20 minutes cemented their control of the game. Kylie Fuller would net a hat trick on three consecutive goals, bookended by scores from Isabella Keogh and Maddie Eddy.
Merrimack outshot the Mount 23-12 and 11-6 on goal. Mount keeper
Abigail Makela finished the contest with six saves.
Mount St. Mary's now stands at 2-4 (0-1 MAAC) this season. Returning home next weekend, they look to rebound against Saint Peter's during a Saturday (Sept. 13) showdown. Kickoff is at noon from Waldron Family Stadium.
