Fast Start Nets Cushion for Women’s Soccer’s First MAAC Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 13, 2025) – A flurry of first half goals proved to make the difference as Mount St. Mary's women's soccer held off a second half comeback to earn a 3-2 triumph over Saint Peter's Saturday. The victory improves the Mount's record to 3-4 this season with a 1-1 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Ines Gama Ferreira, Joelle Hamel, and Lillian Young each found the back of the net for the Mountaineers. The first of which came in the fifth minute when Peyton Gallagher found Gama Ferriera in open space, producing a strike into the upper left corner. Hamel scored in the 17th minute, collecting a rebound off a blocked shot to put the home side up 2-0.

Young headed in what wound up being the margin of victory in the 30th minute. Nicole Wilson found the junior on a cross, who beat the Peacocks defender and keeper for the score.

For Gama Ferreira and Young, their goals were their first for the season. Hamel now possesses two goals this year.

Saint Peter's put pressure on the Mountaineers in the second half with a pair of goals over 60 seconds. Julia Pinho Magno scored her fifth goal this year on a pass from Alexa De Barros. The next trip down the field saw De Barros registering a goal with an assist from Joana Dias.

Strong defense throughout and winning back possessions were clutch for the Mount as the minutes ticked away. Maddie MacDonald and Molly Gannon were especially valuable leading a valiant effort from the back line as they thwarted numerous equalizing opportunities by the Peacocks.

Next Saturday (Sept. 20), Mount St. Mary's takes to the road for a showdown with Quinnipiac.
