EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 27, 2025) – In the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer home opener Wednesday,
Joelle Hamel and
Cassidy Nichols tallied goals to give the Mountaineers their first win of the season, defeating Shepherd 2-1 at Waldron Family Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Mount made an immediate charge forward to test the Shepherd defense. With
Erin Antone looking to cross, she was tackled in the box, allowing Hamel to connect on a penalty kick in the 50
th minute. The home side kept up the pressure, and Nichols crossed up the Rams defender on a 1-v-1 and struck the game winner off her left foot.
For Nichols, the goal is the second of the season and her Mount career, joining her strike against Delaware on August 14. Hamel found the back of the net for the first time since her collegiate debut in the 2024 season opener versus Hampton.
Mount St. Mary's outpaced Shepherd in shots, 13-7, including a 9-2 mark in the second half. Defense kept the Rams from challenging
Abigail Makela, who stopped the one Rams shot on target thrown her way.
Head Coach
Liis Abbott earned her first victory in the top job at the Mount with the result.
Back in action on Sunday (Aug. 31), the Mount welcomes Delaware State to Waldron Family Stadium. Kickoff is at noon.
