POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (April 25, 2025) – For the second year in a row, Mount St. Mary's women's water polo were victorious against LIU in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships by a score of 13-11. With the victory against the Sharks, the Mountaineers set up another repeat of last year's playoffs, facing Wagner once more in the second round.
For the first quarter of play, the Mountaineers remained silent, letting LIU score four goals to start the period only for
Rebecca Valentine to score in the hole set to get the Mount on the board. After a 5-1 deficit heading into the second half, the Mount scored four unanswered goals from
Anna Kegel,
Maria Boix Pascual, and two goals from
Anita Radaelli while
Olivia Fernie held firm in the cage to shut the Sharks out during the quarter.
Radaelli picked up here scoring efforts once again after the halftime break, scoring two more against LIU in the third quarter while Pascual and
Leilani Horan added on solos in the 4-3 third quarter win for the Mount. Two goals from
Beatrice Vieira and solos from Kegel and Pascual followed in the fourth as the Mount rounded out another 4-3 quarter win and a booked ticket to the semi-final round.
Radaelli notched four goals against the Sharks followed by a hat trick from Pascual as well as braces from Vieira and Kegel with Horan and Valentine adding on solo scoring efforts.
Robyn Currie added on five assists during the match while Pascual and Radaelli added on a three spot of aids to teammates. And Fernie notched 12 total saves in goal for the Mountaineers against LIU, with three saves coming off of the power play.
