EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 7, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's sophomore bowlers
Piper Chalmers and
Leah Varela were two of six participants in the Allen Park, Michigan sectional to qualify for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Las Vegas in April.
Chalmers and Varela made the top six cut out of a group of over 170 bowlers, based on a cumulative score through six games. With a 1,313 (218.8 average), Chalmers finished runner-up in the section. She bowled over 200 each game, culminating in a 234 opener. Varela earned fourth place with a 1,287 series (214.5 average), reaching a pinnacle of 248 in the third game.
The duo become the third and fourth Mount bowlers to make it to nationals. Rebecca Dodson made it twice, going in 2019 and 2022. Tamera Stanton joined Dodson in 2022.
The ISC Nationals begin April 14 at the South Point Bowling Complex.
Saturday morning sees the Mount St. Mary's team compete in the USBC Sectionals, kicking off a marathon of 64 Baker games over two days.
