Women’s Basketball Slips at Siena, 52-49

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 1, 2025) – In a game where neither offense found their footing, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball saw a late run by the Siena Saints prove the difference in a 52-49 defeat at the UHY Center in Loudonville, New York.

The result, coupled with Marist's win over Saint Peter's, puts the Mountaineers as either the #4 or #5 seed for the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The Mount will face the Red Foxes in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 13 at noon.

Gabrielle Kennerly was the lone Mountaineers player in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Jo Raflo tied a career high for rebounds, matching the 12 she earned against Saint Peter's back on February 1. Giana Hoddinott added eight points and led in assists with four.

Teresa Seppala scored a game-high with 19 points for Siena, including a 10-for-10 day at the charity stripe. Ahniysha Jackson added 13 points.

The Mount is now 13-14 (11-7 MAAC) this year, while Siena improves to 17-10 (14-4 MAAC).

Late runs and answers by the Saints were pivotal to their victory. When the Mountaineers jumped out to an 11-2 lead, Siena responded with a 9-0 run to pull things even at 11-11 entering the second quarter. Anna LeMaster hit a three with 5:26 left in the half to put the Mount up 20-19 but that was followed by a bevy of free throws to secure a 13-0 Siena burst.

The home side would go up as much as 16 before the Mountaineers pieced together a run capped off by a Raflo layup to bring the game back within five. Trailing by eight heading into the final period, the visitors again fought back to a 44-44 tie with a Kennerly three leveling the score. Siena would get the next three buckets, which were enough to fend off one last Mount charge to take the contest.

Before the tournament begins, Mount St. Mary's has two regular season contests remaining. They will face Quinnipiac at home Thursday (March 6) before a prelude with Marist at Poughkeepsie Saturday (March 8).
