Mount St. Mary’s Falls to Fairfield, But Still Clinch MAAC Opening Round Bye

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 27, 2025) – Despite an 81-61 defeat at the hands of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) leader Fairfield, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball still earns an automatic quarterfinals spot in the upcoming conference tournament thanks to scores elsewhere.

Based upon today's league results, the Mountaineers can finish anywhere between third place and sixth place. Niagara and Rider pulled off upsets of their respective competitors, Iona and Merrimack, to push the Mount into the top six window. This means that the team's first postseason game will take place Thursday, March 13 at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

As for the game on Thursday night, Jo Raflo had 16 points to lead the Mount. Giana Hoddinott reached double figures with 10 points. Rosa Revueltas Pareja had the most rebounds with five. Gabrielle Kennerly tied a career-high with five assists.

For team statistics, Mount St. Mary's committed only seven turnovers, second lowest for the season. At the same time, a stingy Stags defense held them to 4-for-26 from three-point range.

Fairfield received 25 points from Meghan Andersen and a 17-point, nine rebound effort from Emina Selimovic.

The Mountaineers hold a 13-13 (11-6 MAAC) record while the Stags are 23-3 (17-0).

The visitors led the contest wire-to-wire aside from a Hoddinott layup to tie the game at two. Kaety L'Amoreaux hit a layup for Fairfield and would hit a double figure advantage as the first quarter neared its end. A Raflo triple pushed back to 19-14, but by the second quarter the Stags gained a comfortable lead back, holding it the rest of the way.

Mount St. Mary's travels to third place Siena for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday (March 1). After that, the team will host Quinnipiac (March 6) and end the regular season at Marist (March 8).
