Mount St. Mary’s to Induct Seven Members to Athletics Hall of Fame

EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 21, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's University is set to induct seven new members to the Athletics Hall of Fame. Among the inductees are a pair of distinguished basketballers, two renowned lacrosse players, a track & field standout, a softball star, and a major contributor to the athletic department.

Tom FitzSimons Jr. 

C'11, MBA'13: Men's Track and Field 

Competing for five years in a Mount St. Mary's uniform, FitzSimons added his name to the plethora of All-Americans that honed their crafts at the Mount. In his fifth season, he took 13th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning a Second Team All-America honor. The year prior, he also qualified for NCAAs, garnering Honorable Mention All-America status. 

FitzSimons was a regular on the podium at the IC4A Championships and Northeast Conference Championships. He registered All-East honors at IC4A's as the victorious decathlete in his junior year, while also winning the Penn Relays Decathlon in 2010. 

He was Northeast Conference Champion three times over his career, twice in the 4x400m relay as well as in the Pole Vault. 

"I'm honored to join the Hall of Fame that consists of many great men and women of the Mount St. Mary's Track & Field team, which includes Olympic Champions, NCAA Champions and countless All-Americans. I am beyond lucky to have had such great coaches around me - Coach Deegan, Coach Stevenson, Coach Phillips, Coach O'Harra and so many other great teammates and staff members. I was always cared for and supported during my time at The Mount - and I am forever grateful." FitzSimons said. 

Sydney A. Henderson 
 
C'13, MBA'14: Women's Basketball 
 
Henderson was the leading force on the first Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team to earn a postseason bid in almost 20 years. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, she earned two all-conference honors, including a First Team All-Northeast Conference selection in her final year at the Mount. Her 1,489 points scored rank eighth all-time among Mountaineers, and her 181 three-pointers are third on the program's all-time list. Henderson also boasts top 10 record marks for career free throw percentage and points in a season. As a graduate student in her final season, the Mount went 19-14 with a 13-5 record in the NEC, and earned a trip to the WNIT – the first postseason for the program since the 1995 NCAA Tournament.  
 
"It is a humbling honor being inducted into the Hall of Fame at Mount St. Mary's University. The Hall of Fame is special because of those who are in itI am grateful and blessed to now be one of those members of the MSM Hall of Fame." Henderson said.  
 
Kelly Nangle 
 
C'06: Women's Lacrosse 
 
A premier member of the Mount's defense during her time in Emmitsburg, Nangle earned a trio of All-NEC honors, including a First Team selection as a senior in 2006. She graduated second in program history for ground balls with 204 and fourth in caused turnovers in 116 – marks Nangle still holds today. She also made an impact in draw controls, attaining 65 over her four seasons. Hitting the ground running as a collegian, her 49 CTs as a freshman is still a class record and stands as the second highest total for a season in Mount history. Nangle and her team made conference in each season she played. Between 2004 and 2005, Nangle and her team won two conference championships and attended two NCAA tournaments. The team went through its first successful stretch in the postseason, culminating in a 2005 appearance in the NCAA championship appearance and 18-2 win over Manhattan in the play-in game. 
 
"This honor means so much to me." Nangle said. "My time at the Mount were some of the best years of my life. To have the opportunity to be honored for the work we did is incredibly humbling and exciting! There's only one Mount St. Mary's!" 
 
Julian V. Norfleet 
 
C'14: Men's Basketball 
 
Norfleet is among the names listed for top Mount St. Mary's guards of the 21st Century, scoring 1,605 points over 126 games, good for 15th on the program's all-time list. After averaging 17.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in her senior season, he earned a spot on both the Second Team All-NEC and the NEC All-Tournament squad. He ranks in the top 10 for assists in program history, dishing out 423 dimes over the course of his career, including 181 as a senior. A sharpshooter from three-point land, Norfleet registered 242 triples as a Mountaineer, the fourth most of any men's basketball player in Emmitsburg. His efforts helped catapult the team to a Northeast Conference championship in 2014, achieving victory over Robert Morris in the title game.  
 
"This honor means everything to me." said Norfleet. "Being selected to the Hall of Fame for anything is a great honor, however, to do it at the Mount comes with great recognition. With over a century of high-level basketball, countless championships, and players from past and present that have made the history of this university very unique. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to join a group of athletes to be their very best and achieved that goal. 
 
Nicole Pagano 
 
C'14: Women's Softball 
 
The all-time winningest pitcher in Mount St. Mary's history, Pagano registered 53 wins in the circle for the Mountaineers across four seasons. She also stands at the Mount's strikeout leader with 662 punchouts, logged the highest number of innings at over 640, and earned three no-hitters. Her earned run average of 1.99 is second-best in Mount history and the best for the 21st Century. Pagano's name is listed in the school's record book 38 times and was twice selected to the Second Team All-NEC. Her senior season was her finest, setting school records for wins (15), strikeouts (209), and ERA (1.18) while being named Third Team All-Northeast by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.  
 
"Being nominated for the Mount's Hall of Fame is an honor of the highest regard as a former softball player." Pagano said. "As an individual, it's a culmination of all the hard work and effort I put in over the years, but it's also a testament to the great teammates and coaches I've had over the years, who picked me up when I was down and pushed me to be the best player I could be." 
 
Andrew Scalley 
 
C'13: Men's Lacrosse 
 
A force to be reckoned with at Waldron Family Stadium and beyond, Scalley was picked as the Rookie of the Year as a freshman and NEC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. He earned postseason recognition during all four years of school, including NEC First Team honors from his sophomore season onward. Scalley continues to hold individual prominence in the record books, where he ranks second all-time in points with 220, and fourth all-time for both goals (129) and assists (91). The MAAC Tournament MVP in 2010, he played a big role in the Mount's back-to-back championships with the MAAC in 2010 and the NEC in 2011.  
 
"It is an honor being recognized, but it is a true testament to the talent that Coach Gravante put around me. My teammates made my job a heck of a lot easier." Scalley said.  
 
Phil McGlade 
 
C'70, MBA'81: Father John "Spike" Cogan Award 
 
A dedicated alumnus and administrator at Mount St. Mary's University for thirty-nine years, Phil McGlade served as Director of Alumni Relations from1976 to 2004 and later Director of Seminary Development and Alumni Relations until his retirement in 2014. During his years at the Mount, he was involved in assisting with many challenges facing the Athletic Department. In 1981, McGlade joined with Kevin Robinson Sr., MBA'80, the late George Gelles, C'64 and Rob Herb, C'78 in establishing the Mount Club to generate much needed revenue for the Athletic Program and he coordinated inaugural promotional events in the Washington, Baltimore and Harrisburg metro areas. 

In the mid-eighties
, McGlade served on eight NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and Quarterfinal Tournament Committees for men's and women's basketball games hosted by the Mount. From 1984-1986, he was a member of two College Athletic Divisional Status Review Committees which recommended a move to Division I. He was also a member of the President's Athletic Conference Affiliation Search Committee. A few of McGlade's additional committee memberships include: the Director of Athletics Search and NCAA Certification, Governance, in 1994 and several Sports Information Director searches. 

McGlade reflected: "To receive the Hall of Fame's Father John "Spike" Cogan Award, named for a revered Mount priest and legend, is an award that I will truly cherish."
 
 
 
The Hall of Fame Class of 2025 receive formal induction on Saturday, January 25 in the Dillon Field House of the Knott ARCC. Events begin at noon with a luncheon followed by the ceremony. The inductees will be honored again prior to the men's basketball contest against Manhattan
