EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 18, 2024) – For a fleeting moment, Mount St. Mary's women's soccer was in the driver's seat on the road at UMBC. After scoring the opening goal, the Mount saw the homestanding Retrievers equalize the contest. The game seemed destined for a draw when UMBC struck home a long distance, game-winning goal with less than five minutes to spare to take the game 2-1.
Luisangely Navas got the Mount on the board with a score in the 55
th minute, feeding off the momentum from a double save by
Adelaide Paredes. The unassisted strike was the second for Navas on the season.
It took three minutes for UMBC to respond. Natasha Munro found the back of the net, assisted by Payton Schenning.
Sydoney Clarke and
Cassidy Nichols registered on-target shots as the Mount attempted to go ahead, but those efforts were saved by the Retrievers keeper. The 86
th minute saw the Mountaineers' hope for a positive result dashed by Maddie Scheppers, hitting her first career goal from 35 yards out.
UMBC finished the match with 26 shots on goal against eight for the Mount. Shots on goal were eight to five in favor of the Retrievers. Paredes finished the contest with six saves.
