EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 31, 2024) – Facing their biggest non-conference challenge of the season, Mount St. Mary's women's soccer fell 2-0 to the Radford Highlanders. The match came after a Senior Day ceremony, honoring seven members of the program.
The game forced the two-time defending Big South Champion Highlanders to rely on its top defender and forward to produce the goals and make the difference. Helena Willson blasted a strike from 35 yards away to give Radford its first goal and Lilian Short drove home a header in the second half for the scores.
Adelaide Paredes continued to be a presence in goal for the Mountaineers, registering seven saves on the afternoon. The defensive effort was bolstered by the back line – mostly comprised by
Gabrielle Olibris,
Emily Streett,
Kayla Pennington, and
Anika Sproxton.
On offense, the Mount finished with nine goals and five on target.
Sydoney Clarke and
Erin Antone completed multi-shot efforts, with both of Clarke's attempts needing saves from Radford goalie Jordan Phillips.
The Mount's best chances came in the early stages of the game, with a Clarke shot saved in the 20
th minute and an Antone deflection that hit the post in the 24
th minute. Willson's goal came on the ensuing counter.
Mount St. Mary's drops to 2-2 on the year while Radford improves to 4-1. The next match for the Mountaineers comes Wednesday (Sept. 4) as the team welcomes back former Northeast Conference rival Saint Francis University.
