EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 21, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's men's soccer begins its 67th season of competition Thursday, welcoming the Binghamton Bearcats to Waldron Family Stadium.

The contests marks the start of the Brett Teach era, who was introduced as the seventh head coach of the team last December.

THE 2023 SEASON

Wins over Fairfield and Canisius, along with some draws, were enough to keep the Mountaineers in playoff contention until the final game of the season. A 3-1 Niagara decision ended the team's campaign at 2-10-3 with a 2-6-2 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junee Lee was the team's leading scorer with seven points including three goals. Mackie Sacarellos, a defensive starter, gathered six points – mainly on assists – and fellow defender Markus Nilsen was a multi-goal scorer. Ammit Bhogal joined Nilsen as a multi-goal scorer, and Ethan Russell was the keeper throughout the season, collecting 54 saves.

THE 2024 TEAM

A total of 29 newcomers are joining the team, with several coming to the Mount during the spring semester and the rest being announced in June. Most are true freshmen, with a handful of transfers, including Graham Dougald and Ittetsu Hirai, who came with Teach from VCU.

Among the returners are Lee, along with much of the defensive unit, including Nilsen, Sacarellos, Maks Czyz, and Erick Villatoro.

The team also has a visible international presence, with players hailing from Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, England, France, Ireland, Japan, Slovenia, and South Korea.

ABOUT BINGHAMTON

Playing in the formidable America East conference – which was a three-bid NCAA tournament conference in 2023 – the Bearcats held their own, going 2-2-3 in league play in 2023. This included a scoreless draw of #18 New Hampshire.

One area the team will have to make up for is goal scoring. A trio of Bearcats in Jack Green, Anthony Lazaridis, Markos Touroukis all scored three times over the course of last season before graduating. Multi-goal scorers Calvin Moe and Cailen Thomas are back with the team.

ALL-TIME SERIES

Thursday is the second-ever meeting between Mount St. Mary's and Binghamton. The two sides met at a tournament hosted by Rider in 2003, which the Bearcats won 2-0.

LOOKING AHEAD

Remaining in Emmitsburg, the Mount hosts Robert Morris Sunday (Aug. 25) afternoon for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
