LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (March 2 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball had many answers for the Siena Saints Saturday night, but the home side compiled one late run to win a 65-56 contest at the UHY Center.
Jo Raflo set the junior class record for three-pointers in a season in the second quarter, surpassing Bridget Birkhead's mark of 60.
Jessica Tomasetti led the team in points with 18.
Jaedyn Jamison came within a rebound of her career high with nine.
Teresa Seppala recorded a double-double for Siena, securing 23 points and 16 rebounds. Ahniysha Jackson, Alden Yergey and Elisa Mevius added double figure efforts.
The Mount is now 12-16 (9-10 MAAC) on the year while Siena is 16-11 (13-6 MAAC).
As the Mount opened the game with three straight turnovers, Siena capitalized with a 7-0 run before Raflo tacked on a foul shot at the 7:51 mark. The Saints would score on the first five trips down the floor, but Mount responded with back-to-back threes by Raflo and Tomasetti to pull back within a possession at 12-9. A triple by
Rosa Revueltas gave the Mount their first lead at 18-17 and they held a 21-20 score after one.
The Saints started hot again in the second with points on their first four trips to go back up by seven. While the Mount was quiet from the floor, they hit some foul shots and locked in on defense to keep it at 29-24 for the second quarter media. This allowed for a run right before halftime, as Raflo hit a game-tying triple and Tomasetti added a go-ahead jumper as the seconds ticked down to put the Mountaineers up 33-31 at halftime.
Siena stormed out of the gates in the third and once again the Mount held firm. They kept the contest within five and made another run late in the quarter, sparked by a pair of triples from Revueltas. Hunt had the final three points of the period and the visitors led 48-47 after the third.
The Mountaineers took their largest lead at five on a make by Raflo, but Siena countered on a 6-0 run to retake the lead. As the game hit the last media, all was deadlocked at 55. The Saints then closed out the game by scoring 10 of the last 11 points, including a 9-0 run to cap off the night.
The regular season concludes next Saturday (March 9) as the Mount welcomes Saint Peter's for Senior Day. Tip-off is 1 p.m. from Knott Arena with ceremonies occurring pregame.
