EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 7th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's baseball pitching alumnus
Cooper Adams C'23 has signed a professional free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Adams guided the Mountaineer pitching staff with a 4.70 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 82 1/3 innings. He held opposing batters to a .277 average last season, while cementing his name in the program's record books with an 8-3 win-loss record, placing himself second on the all-time single season win list. He finished his Mount career with 132 strikeouts over 147 2/3 innings.
This is the first Mount St. Mary's signee for the Boston Red Sox in the past five years. Adams is also Head Coach
Frank Leoni's first signee since taking the Mount position and 43
rd for his coaching career. Adams also becomes the third active Mount player in the minor leagues, with Trey McGough in the Baltimore Orioles organization, and Jordan Geber who signed with the New York Mets organization.
The Mount has had five players play in Major League baseball. Edward Kenna (C' 1898) was the first Mount player to play in the major leagues, playing for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1902. Joe Engel (C' 1911) spent seven seasons in the major leagues with the Washington Senators and the Cincinnati Reds while Dan Costello played for the New York Yankees in 1913 and three years with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1914-16). John Chapman played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1924 while Ed Edelen played for the Washington Senators in 1932.
