NORFOLK, Va. (February 17th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's erupted for six runs in the first inning and five in the seventh to propel them into the win category over Norfolk State. The final of today's game was 14-4 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Tyler Long went 2-3 at the plate while drawing three walks and scoring twice.
Tommy Moore started the game on the Mound for the Mount, allowing no hits through the first three innings and fanning eight batters in five innings.
Kyle Speas relieved Moore in the sixth, pitching the last four innings, fanned four batters, and recorded his first save as a Mountaineer.
A sloppy inning that played in the Mount's favor as Long led off the first with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With Long on second,
JT Landwehr was able to reach first on a sacrifice bunt via an error by the pitcher and advancing Long to third. With runners on the corner,
David Stirpe walked to load the bags with
Shane Wockley stepping to the plate. Wockley walked in an RBI,
Ty Stecko singled Landwehr and Stirpe in, while advancing Wockley to second. Runners on first and second, one out,
Scott Seeker bunts to the pitcher, reaches on a throwing error, allowing Wockley to score and Stecko advances to third.
Aiden Tierney doubled down the first base line, allowing Stecko and Seeker to score, 6-0.
The Mount added a run in the top of the third as Seeker led off the inning with a single.
Josh Braxton singled to right field advancing Seeker, both advance a base on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch allowed Seeker to score and Braxton to move to third base, 8-0.
The Spartans came up with an answer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles put runners on first and second with one out, a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third base. Jordan Journette tripled to right center, pushing two runs across the plate, 8-2. They added two more the next inning as Jamal Ritter hit a two-run bomb over the right field fence, 8-4.
The Mountaineers rattled five more off in the seventh inning to close today's game out confidently. Tierney started things off with a single to right field, pushing Braxton to second and Stecko and Seeker across the plate. Landwehr drove a hit by pitch run in, followed by a
Jayson Kramer sac-fly to left center allowing Tierney to score. Wockley added the last run with a single through the right side, scoring Long, 13-4.
