Box Score NORFOLK, Va. (February 16th, 2024) – The Mountaineers lost the first of three games on the road in Norfolk, Virginia versus the Norfolk State Spartans. The final of tonight's game was 8-3 in favor of Norfolk State.
The game started with an active first inning from both teams. The Mount took an early 1-0 lead after
Tyler Long drew a walk and made his way around the basepath to score on a
Scott Seeker RBI. The Spartans answered in the bottom of the first with a Cam Mazell two-run shot to right field, 1-2.
A quiet second inning led to a noisy third for the Mount as
Scott Seeker reached first on a throwing error.
David Stirpe followed with a stripe to left field giving himself enough for a double while advancing Seeker to third. Two runners in scoring position
Shane Wockley answered the call with a single to right-center, scoring Seeker and Stirpe, 3-2.
After three strong innings on the Mound for the Mount's
Brendan Yagesh, relieved by
Luke Pryor, the Spartans were able to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth via an error by Long, allowing Collin Curry to score, 3-3. Norfolk State scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brendan Burke started the scoring with a hit by pitch RBI, Curry drew a walk scoring Mazell, and Jalen Jones sac-flied scoring Justin Journette while Burke scored on a throwing error from right field, the Mount down 7-3 headed into the seventh inning. Scoring ended with a Jamal Ritter home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh, 8-3.
