Box Score Lawrenceville, N.J. (February 16, 2024)--Mount St. Mary's saw its four-game win streak stopped in a 61-57 loss at Rider on Friday night. The Broncs scored the final six points of the game to earn the win.
Jedy Cordilia paced the Mount with 14 points while
De'Shayne Montgomery added 11 off the bench.
Trailing 55-50, the Mount (11-14, 7-7 MAAC) went on a 7-0 run to take the lead in the final minute. Montgomery opened the run with a pair of free throws with 2:20 on the clock to make it a three-point deficit. The Mountaineers got a pair of defensive stops, and
Dakota Leffew nailed a pull-up jumper with 1:12 left to make it a one-point game. The Mount forced a turnover, and
Dallas Hobbs took advantage, draining a clutch three-pointer to put the Mount on top, 57-55, with 52 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Rider's Allen Powell was fouled, and he hit both free throws to tie the score. On the Mount's possession,
Dola Adebayo had the ball in the post, but turned the ball over. In the scramble for the loose ball, Adebayo fouled Ruben Rodriguez, who hit 1-of-2 at the line to give Rider a 58-57 lead. The Mountaineers had a chance to take the lead, but Cordilia missed a lay-up and Rider's Tariq Ingraham hit 1-of-2 to make it a two-point game. Cordilia was fouled on the rebound, and he headed to the line with the chance to tie the score, but he missed the front end of the one-and-one, and Rider's Mervin James was fouled on the rebound. James hit both free throws to seal the victory.
The Mount opened the second half with a 12-to-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 39-26.
Joshua Reaves hit a pair of three-pointers during the run, including the capper with 15:40 left in the half that put the Mount up by 13.
The Mount held a 44-33 lead after a Cordilia basket with just over 13 minutes left. From there, Rider went on a 22-to-6 run to build the 55-50 lead.
Cordilia led the Mount with 14 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field while also collecting seven rebounds. Montomgery added 11 points and four boards off the bench for the Mount. Leffew, the Mount's leading scorer, was held to eight points and eight rebounds in the game, snapping his streak of consecutive games in double figures at 23. Leffew was just 4-of-18 from the field in the contest. Reaves added eight points while Hobbs had seven points and four boards in the loss. James led all scorers in the game with 16 points while Ingraham added 12, Powell 10 and DJ Dudley 10 for the Broncs (9-16, 6-8 MAAC).
The Mount stays on the road with a 2:00 p.m. game at Fairfield on Sunday.
