EMMITSBURG, Md. (December 8, 2024) – Battling in the D1A Fall Classic in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Mount St. Mary's men's rugby continues its impressive late season run with a victory in the Battle of the Cowpens Bowl.
Facing the undefeated Arizona Wildcats, the Mountaineers took the game with a final score of 45-20.
Evan Corbett was the man of the match, accounting for 25 of the team's points.
A late first half rally secured a lead for the Mount entering the break. Corbett started the scoring with a 7-0 lead, feeding off a 30-meter gain from
James Stelluti. Arizona rattled off 15 consecutive points before Corbett kicked a penalty goal at the 35 minute mark.
Joe Sharrock then picked off a Wildcats pass and ran it back to knot the score at 15. Corbett's conversion allowed for a 17-15 Mountaineers lead.
Mount St. Mary's cemented the contest with four tries in a row. Corbett made an incredible individual effort taking the ball in the wide channel and beating defenders to the corner.
Damon James was the next scorer, punching in a short gain after a successful drive.
Shemar Lewis etched the third try on a goal line effort and a pass from
Hayden McKay.
Logan Wild added the exclamation point by going in untouched. Corbett converted all four conversions following the tries.
The victory is now the Mount's fifth in a row, joining wins against Mary Washington, Belmont Abbey, St. Bonaventure, and Southern Virginia.
With the triumph, Mount St. Mary's rugby stands at 7-3 for the 15's season. Play resumes February 8
th when the team faces Tennessee.
